INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Alex: And I'm Alex. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 11. Asking about location or position. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about location or position. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "Where is the subway station?" |
Alex: ¿Dónde está la estación del metro? |
Alex: [slow] ¿Dónde está la estación del metro? |
Eric: The pattern for asking about location or position has 3 elements. First, "Where." |
Alex: Dónde. |
Eric: Second, a conjugated verb, "is." |
Alex: está. |
Eric: Third, a complement, "the subway station." |
Alex: la estación del metro. |
Eric: Altogether, we have.."Where is the subway station?" |
Alex: ¿Dónde está la estación del metro? [slow] ¿Dónde está la estación del metro? [normal] ¿Dónde está la estación del metro? |
Eric: The word "where" is at the beginning of the question followed by a conjugated verb, either in present, past, or future tense. At the end you can add more details about the information you want – it can be another verb, adverb, noun, and so on. |
Alex: ¿Dónde está la estación del metro? |
Eric: So remember that to ask about location or position, start with the word "where," followed by a conjugated verb, and add a complement for more details. |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Where did you buy your bag?" First, "Where." |
Alex: Dónde. |
Eric: Second, a conjugated verb, "did you buy." |
Alex: compraste. |
Eric: Third, a complement, "your bag." |
Alex: tu bolsa. |
Eric: Altogether we have.. |
Alex: ¿Dónde compraste tu bolsa? [slow] ¿Dónde compraste tu bolsa? [normal] ¿Dónde compraste tu bolsa? |
Eric: "Where did you buy your bag?" |
[pause] |
Alex: ¿Dónde compraste tu bolsa? |
Eric: How do you say - "Where will the party take place?" To give you a hint, "to be" is.. |
Alex: ser. [slow] ser. [normal] ser. |
Eric: Where will the party take place? |
[pause] |
Alex: ¿Dónde será la fiesta? [slow] ¿Dónde será la fiesta? [normal] ¿Dónde será la fiesta? |
[pause] |
Alex: ¿Dónde será la fiesta? |
