How Do You Say This and That? in Mexican Spanish
In this lesson, you’ll learn a question that will help you improve your Spanish vocabulary without carrying a dictionary with you.“How do you say [something] in Spanish?” This sentence will allow you to not depend on your pocket dictionary.
Mexico is famous for its beer, so let’s assume that you want to buy some, but have no idea what to call it in Spanish!
“How do you say ‘beer’ in Spanish?” is
¿Cómo se dice “beer” en español?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Có-mo se di-ce “beer” en es-pa-ñol?
Once more:
¿Cómo se dice “beer” en español?
The first word, cómo means, “how”.
(slow) có-mo.
cómo.
This is followed by se dice, a form of the verb translated in English as “to say”.
(slow) Se di-ce.
se dice.
Then we have the word in English, “beer” in this case.
And at the end of the question there is en español translated as “in Spanish”.
(slow) en es-pa-ñol.
en español.
All together, we have
¿Cómo se dice “beer” en español?
Remember that we’ve already covered the word “beer” in one of our previous lessons, in Spanish “beer” is cerveza.
You can also use this expression without using any English. To accomplish this, you can use the expression “How do you say this in Spanish?” In Spanish, “this” is esto.
(slow) es-to.
esto.
So in Spanish “How do you say this in Spanish?” is
¿Cómo se dice esto en español?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Có-mo se di-ce es-to en es-pa-ñol?
Once again:
¿Cómo se dice esto en español?
The structure is exactly the same as the previous sentence, except that instead of “beer” we have the word esto, which is the neutral form of “this” in Spanish.
One more time, it is:
¿Cómo se dice esto en español?
While asking this question, you can point at the specific something that you are curious about.
To ask, “How do you say that in Spanish?” simply substitute the word esto with eso which means “that”.
(slow) e-so.
eso.
The phrase will sound like this:
¿Cómo se dice eso en español?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Có-mo se di-ce e-so en es-pa-ñol?
Once more:
¿Cómo se dice eso en español?
Eso is the neutral form for “that” in Spanish.
Let’s say that you are invited to a birthday party. You’ll need to know how to say “Happy birthday” in Spanish! The question sounds like this:
¿Cómo se dice “Happy birthday” en español?
“How do you say ‘happy birthday’ in Spanish?”
(slow) ¿Có-mo se di-ce “Happy birthday” en es-pa-ñol?
¿Cómo se dice “Happy birthday” en español?
By the way, “happy birthday” in Spanish is “Feliz Cumpleaños”.
To close out today's lessons, we’d like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !buena suerte! which means “Good luck!” in Spanish.
“How do you say 'beer' in Spanish?” - ¿Cómo se dice "beer" en español?
“How do you say this in Spanish?” - ¿Cómo se dice esto en español?
“How do you say that in Spanish?” - ¿Cómo se dice eso en español?
“How do you say 'happy birthday' in Spanish?” -¿Cómo se dice "Happy birthday" en español?
Alright! That's going to do it for this lesson. Hasta luego.
