Where Can I Find This Place? in Mexican Spanish
In the previous lesson, we covered how to ask where things and places are. In this lesson, we’ll introduce you to another useful phrase for finding the place you need. This lesson’s phrase is “Is there a (place) near here?”
First, we need a place. Let’s use the word hospital, which means “hospital"
In Spanish, “Is there a hospital near here?” is
¿Hay un hospital por aquí?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Hay un hos-pi-tal por a-quí?
¿Hay un hospital por aquí?
The first word, hay, can be translated in English as “there is” or “is there”
(slow) Hay.
Hay.
Next comes un hospital which means “a hospital”
(slow) un hos-pi-tal.
un hospital.
After that comes por aquí. These two words together mean “around here” or “near here”
(slow) Por a-quí.
Por aquí.
All together, it’s
¿Hay un hospital por aquí?
Don’t forget to add at the beginning the polite expression disculpe, which means “excuse me”.
Replace the words un hospital with any other place, and your question will be really useful.
Imagine that you need to withdraw some money from your bank account.
In Spanish, “Is there an ATM near here?” is
¿Hay un cajero automático por aquí?
The only words that changed are the thing you are looking for, in this case, un cajero automático.
(slow) un ca-je-ro au-to-má-ti-co.
un cajero automático.
(slow) ¿Hay un ca-je-ro au-to-má-ti-co por a-quí?
¿Hay un cajero automático por aquí?
Another place you'll probably need to find during your trip to Mexico is “a pharmacy”. In Spanish, that is una farmacia. “Is there a pharmacy around here?” is:
(slow) ¿Hay una far-ma-cia por a-quí?
¿Hay una farmacia por aquí?
To close out today's lessons, we’d like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !buena suerte! which means “Good luck!” in Spanish.
“Is there a hospital near here?” - ¿Hay un hospital por aquí?
“Is there an ATM near here?” - ¿Hay un cajero automático por aquí?
“Is there a pharmacy around here?” - ¿Hay una farmacia por aquí?
Alright! That's going to do it for this lesson. Hasta luego.
