INTRODUCTION
In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce some more useful phrases for hotels and alike.
GRAMMAR POINT
The first phrase is “What time is check out?” which in Spanish is - ¿Cuándo hay que dejar la habitación?
¿Cuándo hay que dejar la habitación?
Let’s break it down by syllable: ¿Cuán-do hay que de-jar la ha-bi-ta-ción?
And now, let’s hear it once again, ¿Cuándo hay que dejar la habitación?
The first word, cuándo, means “when.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: cuán-do.
And cuándo.
This is followed by the expression hay que dejar, which in Spanish is “has to be left.”
hay que dejar
Syllable break down: hay que de-jar.
And one more time, hay que dejar.
So, to recap here, we have - Cuándo hay que dejar…
Literally, this means “When has to be left…”
Let’s take a look at the next word, la, which is the article “the” for feminine singular.
la
la
And finally, we have habitación, which means “room.”
Let’s break it down by syllable: ha-bi-ta-ción.
And once again, habitación.
So all together, we have - ¿Cuándo hay que dejar la habitación?
Literally, this means “When has to be left the room?” though it’s understood as “What time is check out?”
And there will be times when you need more of certain things. Let’s try towels.
In Spanish, Can I have some more towels? is ¿Me puede dar más toallas?
¿Me puede dar más toallas?
This phrase can be used for any other thing you may need. The only thing that changes is the things you are looking for. In this case, it’s toallas.
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: to-a-llas.
And toallas.
There are a few more words that might come in handy, “toothbrush” cepillo de dientes.
ce-pi-llo de dien-tes
And one more time, cepillo de dientes
“Toothpaste” - pasta de dientes
pas-ta de dien-tes
And one more time, pasta de dientes.
“Shampoo,” this one is easy, champú.
cham-pú
And one more time, champú.
“Soap” - jabón
ja-bón
And one more time, jabón.
This phrase will come in handy before leaving the hotel, talking with taxi drivers or other people trying to help you locate a desired item. Now that you are able to ask, you’re going to get an answer. As we’re running out of time, we’re going to have to cover that in the next lesson.
This phrase for asking for something changes a little bit if you are at a bar or a restaurant and are asking to be served more of something. In this case, you should say - ¿Me puede poner más hielo? which means “Can you give me more ice?” in case you need more ice in your drink.
¿Me puede poner más hielo?
Let’s break it down by syllable: ¿Me pue-de po-ner más hie-lo?
And now, let’s hear it again, ¿Me puede poner más hielo?
You can use the same expression when asking for more milk in your cafe au lait like this, ¿Me puede poner más leche?
¿Me puede poner más leche?
In Spanish, cafe au lait is café con leche
café con leche

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for saying it aloud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so buena suerte, that means “good luck” in Spanish.
