INTRODUCTION
In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around.
Now, a dictionary is a great idea, but don’t forget that you can use Spanish to learn in a more fun and interactive way.
GRAMMAR POINT
In Spanish, “How do you say this in Spanish?” is ¿Cómo se dice esto en español?
¿Cómo se dice esto en español?
Let’s break it down by syllable: ¿Có-mo se di-ce es-to en es-pa-ñol?
And now, let’s hear it once again, ¿Cómo se dice esto en español?
The first word, cómo means “how.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: có-mo.
And có-mo.
This is followed by se, which in Spanish is a pronoun, se.
Next, we have dice, which means “it says.”
Let’s break it down by syllable: di-ce.
And now, let’s hear it again, dice.
So, to recap here, we have, Cómo se dice…
Literally, this means “How is it said…”
Let’s take a look at the next word, esto, which as you know means “this.”
esto
Then we have en, which means “in.”
en
And finally, we have español, which is “Spanish.”
Let’s break it down by syllable: es-pa-ñol.
Once again, español.
So, all together, we have ¿Cómo se dice esto en español?
Literally, this means, “How is this said in Spanish.”
You can also replace “this” with an English word to keep the conversation moving along.
In Spanish, “How do you say apricot in Spanish” is ¿Cómo se dice apricot en español?
¿Cómo se dice apricot en español?
Let’s break it down by syllable: ¿Có-mo se di-ce ap-ri-cot en es-pa-ñol?
Now, let’s hear it once again, ¿Cómo se dice apricot en español?
The first word cómo means “how.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: có-mo.
And cómo.
This is followed by se, which in Spanish is a pronoun.
Then we have dice.

One more time, dice, which means “it says.”
So, to recap here, we have, Cómo se dice…
Literally, this means “How is it said…”
Let’s take a look at the next word, en, which means “in.”
en
And finally, we have español which is “Spanish.”
es-pa-ñol
Once again, español.
So, all together, we have ¿Cómo se dice “apricot” en español?
Literally, this means “How is apricot said in Spanish?” though we translate it as “How do you say Apricot in Spanish?”
By the way, “apricot” in Spanish is albaricoque.
albaricoque
If you compare the English version of today’s phrases, “How do you say…” with the Spanish version, Cómo se dice…, you will surely notice that it’s not a literal translation.
“How do you say” in Spanish is cómo decis.
For example - ¿Como decis esto en español? “How do you say this in Spanish?”
Decis is a conjugated form of the verb decir, which means “to say.”
As you know, conjugated forms of Spanish verbs imply a subject.
Decis implies tú, which is “you.”
We have instead given you an impersonal phrase, ¿Cómo se dice esto en español? which could be translated as “How is this said in Spanish?”

Outro
