INTRODUCTION
In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce to you directions that will help you find the place you’re looking for. Previously, we introduced, “Is there (something) near here?” and “Where is there a (something)?” But while we can now ask, we haven’t addressed understanding the answer.
GRAMMAR POINT
Today, we’re going to work on understanding what is said. So, today, we’ll go over basic directions.
First, we have “go straight.”
In Spanish, “go straight” is sigue recto.
sigue recto
Let’s break it down by syllable: si-gue rec-to.
And now, let’s hear it once again, sigue recto.
The first word, sigue, means “you go on.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: si-gue.
And sigue.
This is followed by recto, which in Spanish is “straight.”
recto
Syllable break down: rec-to.
And one more time, recto.
So, all together, we have, sigue recto.
Literally, this means “go on straight.”
Now, we’re going to work on turning.
Let’s try “turn right.” In Spanish, “turn right” is gira a la derecha.
Gira a la derecha
The first word, gira, means “U-turn.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: gira.
And gira.
This is followed by a, which in Spanish is “to.”
a
Then we have la, which is the article “the” for feminine singular.
la
And finally, we have derecha, which means “right.”
Let’s break down this word: de-re-cha.
And hear it one more time, derecha.
Now, “turn left.” In Spanish, “turn left” is - Gira a la izquierda.
Gira a la izquierda.
The first word is the same as the previous expression, gira, and means “U-turn.”
This is followed by a which in Spanish is “to.”
a
Then we have la, which is again the article “the” for feminine singular.
la
And finally we have izquierda, which means “left.”
Let’s break down this word: iz-quier-da.
And hear it one more time: iz-quier-da.
Now, in Spanish, “It’s on the right” is Está a la derecha.
Está a la derecha.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Es-tá a la de-re-cha.
And now, let’s hear it once again, Está a la derecha.
The first word, está, means “it is.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: es-tá.
And está.
This is followed by a, which in Spanish is “at.”
a
Then we have la, which is the article “the” for feminine singular.
la
Finally, we have derecha, which means “right.”
Let’s break it down by syllable: de-re-cha.
And hear it once again, derecha.
So, all together, we have Está a la derecha.
Literally, this means “It’s on the right.”
Now, let’s try “It’s on the left” which in Spanish is Está a la izquierda.
Está a la izquierda.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Es-tá a la iz-quier-da.
And now, let’s hear it once again, Está a la izquierda.
The only difference here is the final word, izquierda, which means “left.”
Let’s break down this word: iz-quier-da.
And hear it once again, izquierda.
So, all together, we have, Está a la izquierda.
Literally, this means “It’s on the left.”
Another common way you will hear for “It’s on the right” or “It’s on the left” is Está a mano derecha or Está a mano izquierda.
These phrases literally mean “It’s on the right hand” and “It’s on the left hand.”
Obviously, mano is “hand” in Spanish.
mano
Let’s hear again these phrases, Está a mano derecha and Está a mano izquierda.
