Peter; ...a lot of it is based on my experiences with Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Spanish.
Becky: So you don’t have to fail at your language goals. If you made a new year’s resolution this year...
Peter: ...Or set any language goal for that matter....
Becky: You can skip the mistakes most learners make, you can learn how to stay motivated...
Peter: ...and reach your goals faster with the Inner Circle.
Becky: Peter, can we give our listeners a sneak peek? For example, why do most learners fail their goals?
Peter: Great question, Becky. It’s because their goal’s something like... “I want be fluent in Japanese by September” ...which has 3 key things wrong with it.
Becky: Number 1, It’s unrealistic, because... you want to be fluent by September and you just started now?
Peter: That’s a huge goal and you’re going to set yourself up for failure.
Becky: Number 2, It’s not measurable.
Peter: I mean how do you define fluency? It’s a very open ended question. So you’re not even defining your goal.
Becky: You really can’t aim for “fluency” because that’s very vague.
Peter: Exactly. And number 3, There’s no action plan. How will you do it? Most learners have no plan and they end up failing.
Becky: So, to set a goal that you will achieve, you need these 3 crucial rules.
Peter: Number 1, It has to be realistic. For example... learn 100 new words this month. A small monthly goal is a lot more realistic than ‘becoming fluent by September’, right?
Becky: Right. It’s also measurable. That’s rule number 2. You know you need to learn 100 words...
Peter:... and you know you need to know them by the end of this month. So either you know them...
Becky: ...Or you don't! And rule number 3, You need an action plan: How will you learn 100 words in a month?
Peter: Take those 100 words, divide by 4 weeks in a month and learn 25 a week, or 5 a day for 5 days. Give yourself weekends off.
Becky: And you can do it with flashcards, for 30 minutes a day during your designated study time.
Peter: And that’s how you easily reach a goal in 1 month. Then, you can aim for more.
Becky: So, listeners - these are the kinds of topics covered in the Inner Circle.
Peter: if you want to get in on the successful strategies and tested methods...
Becky: ...and skip the mistakes most learners make, sign up for our 6-month challenge!
Peter: Get 6 months of unlimited Premium Access at 45% OFF. Just $66 for 6 months of access.

Hola Gloria,

Thank you for sharing!

It's very important to listen to spanish out side of the SpanishPod101 lessons, this way your spanish listening skills will improve rapidly.

Buen trabajo, sigue practicando español todos los días.

I have always been a well-motivated person so learning Spanish came easy for me with the vocabulary and grammar when I studied Spanish in college many years ago. I wrote out my flash cards with English on one side and Spanish on the other side and practiced my words every day. I never missed a day.

With the grammar, I came to realize that if I could say “Me gusta helado.”, I could say “Me gusta comer helado.” and “Me gusta comer helado chocolate.” It was simply taking a sentence structure and building on it.

My difficulty was in the comprehension of Spanish. I already had a very large vocabulary so it was not a matter of learning any new words but I still had to start out with the Absolute Beginner Series for understanding the conversations.

Let me say that SpanishPod101 has been a tremendous help to me and my understanding of the Spanish language is much better now than it was before I started SpanishPod101. However, I still have to continue working on it as some people just talk too fast.

Therefore, in addition to SpanishPod101, I watch Spanish movies and listen to the Bible on CD in Spanish. Listening every single day to something in Spanish is what helps me most. Listening, listening, listening; that is the key to my learning Spanish.
