INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 4. Giving the location of something.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving the location of something.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "The car is in the parking lot."
Alex: El coche está en el estacionamiento.
Alex: [slow] El coche está en el estacionamiento.
Eric: The pattern for giving the location of something has 4 elements. First comes a noun phrase – in this case "The car."
Alex: El coche.
Eric: Second, the verb "to be" conjugated in the third person singular form.
Alex: está.
Eric: Third, a preposition – in this case "in."
Alex: en.
Eric: And last, a noun phrase, "the parking lot."
Alex: el estacionamiento.
Eric: Altogether, we have.."The car is in the parking lot."
Alex: El coche está en el estacionamiento. [slow] El coche está en el estacionamiento. [normal] El coche está en el estacionamiento.
Eric: In Spanish the subject - pronoun, noun, noun phrase, or proper noun - is usually the first element of a sentence followed by the verb. In this case, it’s the verb "to be" in its present indicative form. It is followed by a preposition and a noun or noun phrase.
Alex: El coche está en el estacionamiento.
Eric: So remember that to give the location of something, just say a noun or noun phrase, plus the verb "to be," then a preposition, plus another noun or noun phrase.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "The computer is on the table." First comes a noun phrase, in this case "The computer."
Alex: La computadora.
Eric: Second, the verb "to be."
Alex: está.
Eric: Third, the preposition, in this case "on."
Alex: sobre.
Eric: And last, a noun phrase, "the table."
Alex: la mesa.
Eric: Altogether we have..
Alex: La computadora está sobre la mesa. [slow] La computadora está sobre la mesa. [normal] La computadora está sobre la mesa.
Eric: "The computer is on the table."
[pause]
Alex: La computadora está sobre la mesa.
Eric: How do you say - "My bag is in the kitchen." To give you a hint, "the kitchen" is..
Alex: la cocina. [slow] la cocina. [normal] la cocina.
Eric: My bag is in the kitchen.
[pause]
Alex: Mi bolsa está en la cocina. [slow] Mi bolsa está en la cocina. [normal] Mi bolsa está en la cocina.
[pause]
Alex: Mi bolsa está en la cocina.
