| Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 21. Explaining a Result or Response. |
| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for explaining the result of, or the response to, an action or condition. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, "I have the day off so I will go to the movies." |
| Alex: Tengo el día libre así que iré al cine. |
| Alex: [slow] Tengo el día libre así que iré al cine. |
| Eric: The pattern for explaining a response to an action or condition has 3 elements. First, clause A. In this case, that’s "I have the day off." |
| Alex: Tengo el día libre. |
| Eric: Second, "so." |
| Alex: así que. |
| Eric: Third, Clause B. "I will go to the movies." |
| Alex: iré al cine. |
| Eric: Altogether, we have... "I have the day off so I will go to the movies." |
| Alex: Tengo el día libre así que iré al cine. [slow] Tengo el día libre así que iré al cine. [normal] Tengo el día libre así que iré al cine. |
| Eric: To explain an action as the result of something, first state the current action or condition (Clause A). Then, comes the phrase meaning “so”. In Spanish, this is |
| Alex: así que. |
| Eric: After which you add Clause B. This is the result or the response to the action or condition in the first clause. Note that Clause A contains conjugated verbs in the simple present tense, and the verb in Clause B is conjugated in the simple future tense. |
| Alex: Tengo el día libre así que iré al cine. |
| Eric: So remember: To explain an action as a result of something, first introduce the current condition in Clause A. Then add the word meaning “so.” |
| Alex: así que |
| Eric: This connects Clause A to Clause B, which is the result of that condition. |
| Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "I'm sick so I will stay home." First, Clause A. "I'm sick." |
| Alex: Estoy enfermo. |
| Eric: Second, "so." |
| Alex: así que. |
| Eric: Third, Clause B. "I will stay home." |
| Alex: me quedaré en casa. |
| Eric: Altogether we have... |
| Alex: Estoy enfermo así que me quedaré en casa. [slow] Estoy enfermo así que me quedaré en casa. [normal] Estoy enfermo así que me quedaré en casa. |
| Eric: "I'm sick so I will stay home." |
| [pause] |
| Alex: Estoy enfermo así que me quedaré en casa. |
| Eric: How do you say - "My stomach hurts so I will not eat." To give you a hint, "my stomach hurts" is... |
| Alex: me duele el estómago. [slow] me duele el estómago. [normal] me duele el estómago. |
| Eric: "My stomach hurts so I will not eat." |
