Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 19. Making Commands.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something that needs to be done.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "You have to finish the homework. "
Alex: Tienes que terminar la tarea.
Alex: [slow] Tienes que terminar la tarea.
Eric: The pattern for describing something that needs to be done has 3 elements. First, "You have to."
Alex: Tienes que.
Eric: Second, the verb in infinitive form "finish."
Alex: terminar.
Eric: Third, the complement "the homework."
Alex: la tarea.
Eric: Altogether, we have... "You have to finish the homework. "
Alex: Tienes que terminar la tarea. [slow] Tienes que terminar la tarea. [normal] Tienes que terminar la tarea.
Eric: Start with the phrase “You have to.” In Spanish, this is…
Alex: Tienes que
Eric: The verb "have" is conjugated in the second person singular. The pronoun "you" is implied in its conjugation. Next, add a verb in its infinitive form. At the end, you can give details by adding a noun, an adverb, or a phrase.
Alex: Tienes que terminar la tarea.
Eric: So remember: To describe something that needs to be done start with the phrase...
Alex: Tienes que
Eric: add an infinitive verb, and end with a complement.
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "You have to wash the dishes." First, "You have to."
Alex: Tienes que.
Eric: Second, the verb in infinitive form "wash."
Alex: lavar.
Eric: Third, the complement. "The dishes."
Alex: los platos.
Eric: Altogether we have...
Alex: Tienes que lavar los platos. [slow] Tienes que lavar los platos. [normal] Tienes que lavar los platos.
Eric: "You have to wash the dishes."
[pause]
Alex: Tienes que lavar los platos.
Eric: How do you say - "You have to eat fruits and vegetables." To give you a hint, "fruits and vegetables" is...
Alex: frutas y verduras. [slow] frutas y verduras. [normal] frutas y verduras.
Eric: "You have to eat fruits and vegetables."
[pause]
Alex: Tienes que comer frutas y verduras. [slow] Tienes que comer frutas y verduras. [normal] Tienes que comer frutas y verduras.
[pause]
Alex: Tienes que comer frutas y verduras.

Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I’ll give you the English equivalent of the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud in Spanish. Here we go.
