Hola a todos! Soy Lucia. Hi everybody! I’m Lucia.
Welcome to SpanishPod101.com’s Español en tres minutos. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Spanish.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use Spanish adjectives.
In this lesson, we will talking about some of the most common Spanish verbs. You will hear these ones all the time!
The first verb we are will learn is ir, which means "to go". We will use this word to talk about many different destinations.
You will see that in Spanish, you have to use a linking word after ir.
To say you’re going somewhere in Spanish, the pattern is Voy a.... plus your destination.
Let’s break this down.
Voy is the first person form of the verb ir, "to go" in the present tense.
Then we add a.This connects the verb and the destination, so it’s like “to” in English.
Then, you add the destination.
So imagine someone asks you ¿A dónde vas de vacaciones? This means "Where are you going on vacation?"
So if you are going to the beach, for example, you will say Voy a la playa. [slowly] Voy a la playa.
Voy a, which is “I’m going to”, and then “la playa”, which is “the beach”. Beach is a feminine noun, so we have the feminine article la, meaning “the”, plus playa, or “beach”.
Pretty simple, right? Let’s hear it again.
Voy a la playa.
Ready for another example?
Let’s say you’re going to the theater. Theater is a masculine noun, so “the theater” is el teatro.
So you might think you would say: Voy a el teatro.
This is close, but not really correct. One part changes here.
When you have a masculine noun, the a and el always combine to form al.
So the correct sentence is:
Voy al teatro.
I’m going to the theater.
Let’s recap.
For a feminine noun, it’s:
Voy a la playa.
For a masculine noun, it’s:
Voy al teatro.
Here are two more examples.
With a feminine noun:
Voy a la farmacia. I’m going to the pharmacy.
And with a masculine noun:
Voy al banco. I’m going to the bank.
Now it’s time for Lucia’s tips.
If you want to say you’re going somewhere with somebody, you have to add the word con, which means “with”. For example-
Voy con mi hermano. “I’m going with my brother”.
So, in this lesson, we learned how to use the verb ir and the correct linking words that go with it to talk about your destination.
Next time, we’ll learn another very useful verb, hacer.
Do you know what this verb means? I’ll be waiting for you with the answer in the next Español en 3 minutos.
Hasta la próxima!
