Lesson Transcript

Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Mexico series at SpanishPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring essential cultural information about Mexico, Mexican Culture, and Mexican People. In this lesson, we will talk about Mexican folklore and traditions. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 10 - Gifts Between Worlds
Among the foods that were great Mexican contributions to the Old World are avocados, chocolate, peanuts, pumpkin, beans, vanilla, turkey, herbs, nuts, and spices, all of which hold positions of great importance in Mexican culinary arts.
Mexico, in turn, has received significant influences from other places as well. Spanish imports like onion, garlic, sugar, beef, pork, chicken and cheese products have been completely assimilated into the national cuisine. Invaders and migrants, coming to Mexico between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, have contributed just the same. For example, the Mexican "bolillo" has roots in the French bun, with a crunchy crust and soft center, and in many places is as popular as the tortilla.
No less important are the contributions from Germany in the creation of cold cuts, or "carnes frías", and the art of barley fermentation to produce beer, or "cerveza". From light English beer, like Bohemia or Superior, to strong and dark German beer, like "Negra Modelo" and "Noche Buena", Mexican breweries have attained significant recognition worldwide.
