INTRODUCTION
Gina: Hi everyone, I'm Gina.
Lucia: And I'm Lucia!
Gina: And welcome to Culture Class, Essential Spanish Vocabulary, Lesson 1. In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to daily life. These are five popular Peruvian National Holidays, hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at SpanishPod101.com.
FIVE KEY VOCABULARY ITEMS
Gina: Lucia, what’s our first holiday?
Lucia: Navidad
Gina: “Christmas”

Gina:
Peruvian families gather and wait until midnight to uncover the manger scene with the baby Jesus and then open presents under the Christmas tree. But before that, Peruvian people will usually have turkey with potato salad and arabic rice for Christmas dinner.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Lucia: [normal] El sonido de los fuegos artificiales en Navidad puede durar hasta una hora.
Gina: “The sound of fireworks in Christmas can last up to one hour.”

Gina:
Peruvian people have some traditional customs for New year's like using yellow underwear, eating twelve grapes at midnight, and running around a street block with suitcases! All of these are just for good luck and fun. Peruvian people also enjoy toasting to fireworks at midnight.

Lucia: [normal] Muchas personas viajan a las playas de Perú para festejar el año nuevo.
Gina: “Many people travel to the beaches of Peru to celebrate the new year.”

Gina: “Peruvian Independence day”

Gina:
During the independence festivities all houses are required to put up a Peruvian flag on the roof and students must wear a Peruvian cockade in school. Parades are also popular around this time of year.

Lucia: [normal] Por el día de la independencia del Perú, los colegios organizan desfiles escolares en señal de patriotismo.
Gina: “On Peruvian independence day, schools organize school parades as a sign of patriotism.”

This national holiday celebrated on August 30th commemorates the life and miracles of the first canonized saint in the Americas; Saint Rose of Lima. On this day Peruvian people visit the convent where she lived and throw money and wishes written on paper into a well on the convent patio.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Lucia: [normal] En el día de Santa rosa de Lima, muchas familias visitan al convento donde vivió.
Gina: “On the day of Rose of Lima, many families visit the convent where she lived.”

Lucia: Domingo Santo
Gina: “Easter”

Gina:
At Easter, families usually go to church together. Peruvian kids prepare an egg basket the day before Easter and leave it someplace where the Easter bunny can find it. The next morning, they find their baskets full of chocolate eggs.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Lucia: [normal] Es tradición regalar huevos de chocolate a los niños en domingo santo.
Gina: “It’s tradition to give chocolate eggs to children on Easter day.”

really? why? i think at new year they eat this noodles caled soba. (did i get the spelling right?) and of course the clothes are difrent . no affence to them though.:wink:

in our new year in south korea, we usually get dressed into our national clothes 한복 and it's a little bit scratchy :grin: but other wise it's ok. we eat this soup called 떡국 very delicious :open_mouth: and we visit the ancestors and thank them. with us giving special food to them.

I liked this lesson very much. I've taken other language pod 101 classes and when they have a series of classes on culture it's all in English, which I found to have been useless as a foreign language student, but you included Spanish in the lesson and that was a very pleasent surprise.


Me gustó mucho esta lección. Me he tomado otros idiomas vaina 101 clases y cuando tienen una serie de clases sobre la cultura es todo en Inglés, que me pareció haber sido inútil como un estudiante de lengua extranjera, pero se incluyó español en la lección y que era muy agradable sorpresa.:thumbsup:
