Fernando Rojas: Genial. Sin duda lo disfrutaré.

Lesson focus

James: In this lesson, you'll learn about giving suggestions.
James: But first, let’s review some prepositions that will help you accomplish this! What are the prepositions this time around, Laura?
Laura: They are contra and sin. We’ll start with contra.
James: It has a similar meaning in English to "against", "toward", "counter to", "versus", and "anti." There are several ways to use it. They include expressing opposition to something.
James: "I am against animal abuse." Another use is to indicate being in front of something.
Laura: Estoy parada contra la gasolinera.
James: "I am standing in front of the gas station." It can also be used to express movement.
Laura: Iba corriendo contra el viento
James: "She was running against the wind." Can you remind us of the second preposition and what it can mean in English?
Laura: Sin. It can mean "without", "free of", "counter to", "versus" and "anti."
James: It can be used to indicate a lack of something.
Laura: Se quedó sin agua.
James: "She was left without water." It can also be used to show amount.
James: "I have a hundred pesos in bills, without the coins." Now, let’s move onto some sentence patterns that will help when giving suggestions at work. If you want to directly recommend something, you can say:
Laura: Te recomiendo... llegar temprano.
James: "I recommend... you arrive early." If you want to make a suggestion, say
James: "I suggest you... speak directly with the expert." If you would like to express your opinion, representing a group of people, you can use this expression
James: "We think... it’s better that you take a vacation." If your suggestion is backed up by general knowledge or is something obvious, you can say:
James: "Supposedly... it is better if we hurry." If your suggestion is based on your personal opinion, say:
James: "In my opinion... it is a very good idea:"

Outro

James: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
