Becky: Who is it? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask who it is in Spanish.

Lesson focus

Becky: Here’s how you can ask “Who is it?” in Spanish.
Laura: [Normal] ¿Quién es?
Becky: First is a word meaning “who “
Laura: [Normal] quién [Slow] quién
Becky: Last is the word meaning “is”
Laura: [Normal] es [Slow] es
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning “Who is it?”
Laura: [Slow] ¿Quién es? [Normal] ¿Quién es?
Becky: Now, if you are aware that there is more than one person out there, here’s the way to ask, “Who are they?”
Laura: [Normal] ¿Quiénes son ellos?
Becky: First is a word meaning “who”
Laura: [Normal] quiénes [Slow] quiénes
Becky: Next is the word meaning “are”
Laura: [Normal] son [Slow] son
Becky: Last is the word meaning “they”

Cultural Insight
Becky: Now it’s time for a quick cultural insight.
Laura: If someone knocks at your door, the most common expression we use in Mexico is ¿Quién? which means “who?” If you are the one knocking, just answer with your name, unless they are familiar with your voice, then you can just say - “It’s me.”
