Back in the old days when there was only one phone for a house full of people (yes, we rode dinosaurs to school), you also had to know how to ask for a particular person: "¿Me permite hablar con ___?"

Yes. "le gustaría" is formal. We do that for the dialogs but we will consider this for vocab also.

I think "Le gustaría" is formal? Otherwise it would be "Te gustaría"? If so, I think it would be better to add " (formal)" in the English translation, and also mention the informal form.
