Yes, you could add “hola, como le va” to sound politer and to straight forward.

Salude a alguien deciendo “como te va” y el respondio en englais “okay”, pero me miro de tal modo friamente. ?Piensas estaba siendo demasiado familiar? ?Deberia haber usado registar formal?

Traduccion: I greeted someone by saying “como te va” and he responded in English “okay”, but looked at me coldly. Do you think I was being too forward? Should I have used the formal register?
