Jessi: Top 25 Spanish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 7: Where did you learn Spanish? (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Spanish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Where did you learn Spanish? In Spanish this is
Javier: ¿Dónde aprendiste español?
The first word in the question is
Javier: dónde
Jessi: meaning where in English.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) dónde
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Javier: dónde

Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Javier: aprendiste
Jessi: meaning you learned.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) aprendiste
Jessi: Now repeat.

Jessi: at university
Javier: (slow) en la universidad (regular) en la universidad
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with at university
Javier: Lo aprendí en la universidad
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace in school. Say I learned it at university.

Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace at university with by myself.
Javier: por mi mismo
Jessi: by myself
Javier: (slow) por mi mismo (regular) por mi mismo
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with by myself
Javier: Lo aprendí por mi mismo
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for at university. Say I learned it by myself.

Jessi: To make another phrase, replace by myself with in high school.
Javier: en el instituto
Jessi: in high school
Javier: (slow) en el instituto (regular) en el instituto
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with in high school

Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for by myself. Say I learned it in high school.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Spain and someone asks you where you learned Spanish. You learned Spanish in school. Respond to the question.

Jessi: Now, imagine you learned it at university Respond to the question.

Jessi: Imagine you learned it by myself. . Answer the speaker's question.
Javier: ¿Dónde aprendiste español? (five seconds) Lo aprendí por mi mismo
Jessi: Imagine you learned it in high school. Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿Dónde aprendiste español? (five seconds) Lo aprendí en el instituto
Jessi: Now you want to ask someone where they learned Spanish. Ask the question
