Jessi: Top 25 Spanish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 5: Do you speak Spanish? (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Spanish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Do you speak Spanish? In Spanish this is
Javier: ¿Hablas español?
The first word in the question is
Javier: hablas
Jessi: meaning you speak in English.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) hablas
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Javier: hablas
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Javier: español
Jessi: meaning Spanish.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) español
Jessi: Now repeat.
Javier: español
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Javier: hablas español
{pause}
Jessi: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question Do you speak Spanish??
Javier: Si, hablo un poco.
Jessi: "Yes, I speak a little.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Javier: (Slow) Si, hablo un poco.

To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
B: No. no hablo español
A: Which is like saying No, I don't speak Spanish in English. Let's hear it slowly.
B: (Slowly) No. no hablo español
A: And one more time at normal speed:
B: No. no hablo español
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Javier: sí
Jessi: meaning yes.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) sí
Jessi: Now repeat
Javier: sí
{Pause}
A: And after that
Javier: hablo
meaning I speak.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) hablo
A:Now repeat.
Javier: hablo
{Pause}
A: And next
Javier: un
meaning a .
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) un
A:Now repeat.

A: And next
Javier: poco
meaning bit.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) poco

Jessi: Listen to the speaker say, Yes, I speak a little., and then repeat.
Javier: Si, hablo un poco.

Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace a little with a lot.
Javier: mucho
Jessi: a lot
Javier: (slow) mucho (regular) mucho
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with a lot
Javier: Si, hablo mucho.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace a little. Say Yes, I speak a lot.

Javier: Si, hablo mucho.
Jessi: To make another phrase, replace a lot with enough.
Javier: bastante
Jessi: enough
Javier: (slow) bastante (regular) bastante
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with enough
Javier: Si, hablo bastante.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for a lot. Say Yes, I speak enough.

Jessi: To make another phrase, replace enough with a little bit.
Javier: un poquito
Jessi: a little bit
Javier: (slow) un poquito (regular) un poquito
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with a little bit

Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for enough. Say Yes, I speak a little bit.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Spain and someone asks you if you speak Spanish . You want to answer that you speak a little. Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿Hablas español? (five seconds) Si, hablo un poco.
Jessi: Now you want to answer that you speak a lot Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿Hablas español? (five seconds) Si, hablo mucho.
Jessi: You want to answer that you speak enough. . Answer the speaker's question.
Javier: ¿Hablas español? (five seconds) Si, hablo bastante.
Jessi: Now you want to answer that you speak a little bit. Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿Hablas español? (five seconds) Si, hablo un poquito.
Jessi: Now you want to know ask someone if they speak Spanish. Ask the question
(5 seconds)
Javier: ¿Hablas español?
{pause}
Jessi: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
Javier: ¿Hablas español?
