Jessi: Top 25 Spanish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 23: Whose is this? in Spanish (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Spanish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Whose is this? In Spanish this is
Javier: ¿De quién es esto?
The first word in the question is
Javier: de quién
Jessi: meaning whose in English.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) de quién
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Javier: de quién
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Javier: es
Jessi: meaning is.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) es
Jessi: Now repeat.
Javier: es
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Javier: de quién es
{pause}
And next
Javier: esto
Jessi: meaning this.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) esto
Jessi: Now repeat.

Javier: és
Jessi: meaning it's.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) és
Jessi: Now repeat
Javier: és

Javier: mio
meaning mine.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) mio
A:Now repeat.
Javier: mio
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say, It's mine., and then repeat.
Javier: Es mio
{pause}
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace mine with hers.
Javier: suyo
Jessi: hers
Javier: (slow) suyo (regular) suyo
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with hers
Javier: Es suyo
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace mine. Say It's hers.

Javier: Es suyo
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace hers with my mother's.
Javier: de mi madre
Jessi: my mother's
Javier: (slow) de mi madre (regular) de mi madre
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with my mother's
Javier: Es de mi madre
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for hers. Say It's my mother's.

Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace my mother's with my friend's.
Javier: de mi amigo
Jessi: my friend's

Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name my mother's. Say It's my friend's.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Spain, and someone asks you who something belongs to. You want to say It's mine.. Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿De quién es esto? (five seconds) Es mio
Jessi: Now, you want to say it's It's hers. Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿De quién es esto? (five seconds) Es suyo
Jessi: Now, you want to say it's It's my mother's. Answer the speaker's question.
Javier: ¿De quién es esto? (five seconds) Es de mi madre
Jessi: Now, you want to say It's my friend's. Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿De quién es esto? (five seconds) Es de mi amigo
Jessi: Imagine that you find something, and you want to know who it belongs to. Ask the question

Javier: ¿De quién es esto?
