Jessi: Top 25 Spanish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 18: What are you doing? in Spanish (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Spanish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question What are you doing? In Spanish this is
Javier: ¿Qué estás haciendo?
The first word in the question is
Javier: qué
Jessi: meaning what in English.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) qué
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Javier: qué
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Javier: estás
Jessi: meaning you are.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) estás
Jessi: Now repeat.
Javier: estás

Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Javier: qué estás
{pause}
And next
Javier: haciendo
Jessi: meaning doing.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) haciendo
Jessi: Now repeat.
Javier: haciendo

Jessi: "I'm thinking.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Javier: (Slow) Estoy pensando.

Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Javier: solo
Jessi: meaning only.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) solo
Jessi: Now repeat
Javier: solo
{Pause}
A: And after that
Javier: estoy
meaning am.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) estoy
A:Now repeat.
Javier: estoy
{Pause}
A: And next
Javier: pensando
meaning thinking.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) pensando
A:Now repeat.
Javier: pensando
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say, I'm thinking., and then repeat.
Javier: Estoy pensando.
{pause}
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace thinking with reading.
Javier: leyendo
Jessi: reading
Javier: (slow) leyendo (regular) leyendo
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with reading
Javier: Estoy leyendo.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace thinking. Say I'm reading.
{pause}
Javier: Estoy leyendo.
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace reading with having a rest.
Javier: descansando
Jessi: having a rest
Javier: (slow) descansando (regular) descansando
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with having a rest
Javier: Estoy descansando.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for reading. Say I'm having a rest.

Javier: Estoy descansando.
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace having a rest with studying.
Javier: estudiando
Jessi: studying
Javier: (slow) estudiando (regular) estudiando
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with studying
Javier: Estoy estudiando.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for having a rest. Say I'm studying.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Spain and someone asks you what you're doing. You are thinking. Respond to the question.

Jessi: Now imagine you are reading Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿Qué estás haciendo? (five seconds) Estoy leyendo.
Jessi: Imagine you are having a rest. . Answer the speaker's question.
Javier: ¿Qué estás haciendo? (five seconds) Estoy descansando.
Jessi: Imagine you're studying. Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿Qué estás haciendo? (five seconds) Estoy estudiando.
Jessi: You want to ask someone what they are is doing. Ask the question
(5 seconds)
Javier: ¿Qué estás haciendo?
