Jessi: Top 25 Spanish Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 11: How old are you? in Spanish (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Spanish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question How old are you? In Spanish this is
Javier: ¿Qué edad tienes?
The first word in the question is
Javier: qué
Jessi: meaning what in English.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) qué
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Javier: qué
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Javier: edad
Jessi: meaning age.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) edad
Jessi: Now repeat.
Javier: edad

Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Javier: qué edad

Javier: tienes
Jessi: meaning you have.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) tienes

Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Javier: tengo
Jessi: meaning I have.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) tengo
Jessi: Now repeat
Javier: tengo

A: Next is
Javier: 18
meaning 18.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) 18
A:Now repeat.
Javier: 18
{Pause}
A: And after that
Javier: años
meaning years.
Javier: (Slow, by syllable) años
A:Now repeat.
Javier: años

Jessi: Listen to the speaker say, I'm 18 years old., and then repeat.
Javier: Tengo 18 años.
{pause}
Jessi: To make another phrase, replace 18 with twenty.
Javier: veinte
Jessi: twenty
Javier: (slow) veinte (regular) veinte
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with twenty
Javier: Tengo veinte años.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 18. Say I'm twenty years old.

Javier: Tengo veinte años.
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace twenty with thirty.
Javier: treinta
Jessi: thirty
Javier: (slow) treinta (regular) treinta
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with thirty
Javier: Tengo treinta años.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for twenty. Say I'm thirty years old.

Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace thirty with sixty.

Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for thirty. Say I'm sixty years old.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Spain and someone asks you how old you are. You are 18. Respond to the question.

Jessi: Imagine you are twenty Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿Qué edad tienes? (five seconds) Tengo veinte años.
Jessi: Now imagine you are thirty. . Answer the speaker's question.
Javier: ¿Qué edad tienes? (five seconds) Tengo treinta años.
Jessi: Imagine you're sixty. Respond to the question.
Javier: ¿Qué edad tienes? (five seconds) Tengo sesenta años.
Jessi: You want to ask someone how old they are. Ask the question
