Use English to Your Advantage in Mexico
In this lesson, we’ll cover another extremely important phrase: "Do you speak English?" Using this phrase is important for many reasons. For one, if the person you’re speaking to doesn’t understand English, at least they will be able to understand what you’re asking. Furthermore, it shows a lot of respect on your part, because you’ve made an effort to learn even a little bit of the language. For these reasons and many more, we’re going to cover this very important phrase.
In Spanish, "Do you speak English?" is ¿Habla inglés?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Ha-bla in-glés?
Once more:
¿Habla inglés?
Habla is a form of the verb hablar which in English is translated as “to speak” or “to talk”. And it includes the pronoun “you”, in the formal mode.
(slow) Ha-bla.
Habla.
And the last word, inglés, means “English”
(slow) In-glés
Inglés
Altogether, it’s:
¿Habla inglés?
While talking to young people or people you already know, you can use a more friendly way to ask this question ¿Hablas inglés?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Ha-blas in-glés?
Once more:
¿Hablas inglés?
As you may have noticed, the difference between the two expressions is just a letter “s”, but you have to pay attention because it completely changes the formality level.
¿Hablas inglés?
Now for a change, let's try different languages, since in Mexico City you may find people from different countries, like Germany, France, Korea, China, Japan, Brazil, and so on.
“Do you speak French?" is ¿Habla francés?
The word for “French" is
Francés.
Let’s break it down:
(slow)Fran-cés.
Francés.
The whole phrase is:
(slow) ¿Ha-bla fran-cés?
¿Habla francés?
Now let’s try with “German.” The word for “German” in Spanish is alemán.
(slow)A-le-mán.
Alemán.
So the full sentence will be:
¿Habla alemán?
(slow) ¿Ha-bla a-le-mán?
¿Habla alemán?
When you ask the question “Do you speak English?” in Spanish, there is a big possibility that you will get the answer in Spanish.
Here are few ways of answering this question.
“Yes, I speak English” would be Sí, hablo inglés.
Let’s hear that slowly now:
(slow) Sí, ha-blo in-glés.
And one more time at natural native speed:
Sí, hablo inglés.
The first word, sí, means “yes.”
(slow) Sí.
Sí.
After this comes hablo which means “I speak”.
(slow) Ha-blo
Hablo.
Finally, we have inglés, which means “English.”
(slow) In-glés.
Inglés.
All together, that’s
(slow) Sí, hablo inglés.
Sí, hablo inglés.
This phrase could be made shorter, just by saying “Sí”.
If the answer is negative, Mexican people may say “No, I don’t speak English”: No, no hablo inglés.
Let’s break it down by syllable:
(slow) No, no hablo inglés.
And again at natural native speed:
No, no hablo inglés.
The first word, no means “no”.
(slow) No.
No.
Next we have hablo: “I speak”.
(slow) Ha-blo.
Hablo.
And finally the word inglés, which means “English.”
All together, that’s
(slow) No, no hablo inglés.
No, no hablo inglés.
Sometimes, people will answer only with “no”, which in Spanish is - No.
(slow) No.
No.
To close out today's lessons, we’d like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !buena suerte! which means “Good luck!” in Spanish.
