How Do You Eat This Mexican Food?
In Mexico, there are many delicious dishes. We've already covered how to order them, but now, it’s time to learn how to eat them! That’s not always so obvious. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask, “How do you eat this?"
In Spanish, “How do you eat this?” is
¿Cómo se come esto?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Có-mo se co-me es-to?
Once more:
¿Cómo se come esto?
The first word, Cómo, means “how.”
(slow) Có-mo.
Cómo.
Then we have se come, which is translated as “is eaten”
(slow) se co-me.
se come.
Next comes esto, which means “this”
(slow) es-to.
esto.
The whole question once again is:
¿Cómo se come esto?
Literally translated , it’s “How is this eaten?”
Usually it is easy to guess how a certain Mexican dish has to be eaten, but if you’re dealing with traditional meals, things might get a little bit complicated. So it’s good to know this phrase.
Now that you know how to eat the dish, you might be worried about whether it’s healthy or not. Mexican food is famous because of its richness. If you are concerned about calories, you can ask "Is this food heavy?" which in Spanish is:
¿Esta comida es pesada?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Es-ta co-mi-da es pe-sa-da?
Once more:
¿Esta comida es pesada?
The first word, esta, means “this” and comida means “food”. The two words together make esta comida, “this food”.
(slow) es-ta co-mi-da.
esta comida.
Next we have es, which means “is”
(slow) es.
es.
And at the end comes the word pesada, which means “heavy”.
(slow) pe-sa-da.
pesada.
Altogether, it becomes
¿Esta comida es pesada?
If you don't mind about calories, and what worries you is your stomach, you might like to ask how spicy the dish is. Mexican people can tolerate spicy food easily, but before you eat, you should ask “Is this food spicy?”. In Spanish, that’s...
¿Esta comida es picante?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Es-ta co-mi-da es pi-can-te?
Once more:
¿Esta comida es picante?
In this sentence, we just changed the word pesada meaning “heavy” for picante meaning “spicy”.
(slow) pi-can-te.
picante.
Altogether, it becomes
¿Esta comida es picante?
To close out today's lessons, we’d like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !buena suerte! which means “Good luck!” in Spanish.
“How do you eat this?” - ¿Cómo se come esto?
“Is this food heavy?” - ¿Esta comida es pesada?
“Is this food spicy?” - ¿Esta comida es picante?
Alright! That's going to do it for this lesson. Hasta luego.
