Mexican Spanish Survival Phrases Lesson 13: Mexican Restaurant, Part 1: How Many People? |
Mexico is famous for its tasty food and drinks. There is a wide variety of Mexican dishes, and your job as a visitor is to try as many different meals as possible! However, before you start eating, you have to get to the table! In this lesson, we'll cover getting to the table in a restaurant. |
When entering a Mexican restaurant, you will be greeted with Bienvenido, which is translated as “welcome” |
(slow) Bi-en-ve-ni-do! |
Bienvenido! |
This word means literally “welcome” |
(slow) Bienvenido. |
Bienvenido. |
When you enter a restaurant, a waiter or waitress will come and greet you, and ask you the question “How many people are you?” In Spanish this is ¿Cuántas personas son? |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) ¿Cuán-tas per-so-nas son? |
Once more: |
¿Cuántas personas son? |
The first word, cuántas, means “how many?” |
(slow) Cuán-tas. |
Cuántas. |
After this comes personas, which means “people”. |
(slow) Per-so-nas. |
Personas. |
Last we have son which means "are". |
(slow) Son. |
Son. |
Altogether it's: |
(slow) ¿Cuán-tas per-so-nas son? |
¿Cuántas personas son? |
Now let’s learn how to answer. |
You might tell the waiter or waitress somos dos, which in English means “We’re two." |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Somos dos. |
Once again: |
Somos dos. |
The first word, somos, means "we are". The pronoun here is omitted. |
(slow) So-mos. |
Somos. |
After this comes dos, the number two. |
(slow) Dos. |
Dos. |
Let’s take a look at some of the numbers you might need here, from two to five: |
2 dos |
(slow) dos |
3 tres |
(slow) tres |
4 cuatro |
(slow) cua-tro |
5 cinco |
(slow) cin-co |
If you are just one person, say Sólo yo, the literal translation of this is “only me” or “just me”. |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Sólo yo. |
Once more: |
Sólo yo. |
The first word, sólo, means "only" or "alone”. |
(slow) Sólo. |
Sólo. |
After this we have yo, which is translated as "I" or "me.” |
(slow) Yo. |
Yo. |
To close out today's lessons, we’d like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !buena suerte! which means “Good luck!” in Spanish. |
“Welcome” |
(3 sec) Bienvenido. |
(slow) Bi-en-ve-ni-do. |

No quiero comer sola en los restaurantes de San Felipe, Mexico donde vivo. Sin embargo, me encanta comer en los restaurantes con mi esposo.
