Where Is the Bathroom? in Mexican Spanish
In this lesson, we’ll cover an extremely important phrase - “Where is the bathroom?”
In Spanish “Where is the bathroom?” is
¿En dónde está el baño? You can use this expression when you are invited to someone’s home, or when you are in a restaurant, mall, or any other commercial establishment.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿En dón-de es-tá el ba-ño?
Once more:
¿En dónde está el baño?
Let’s take a closer look at that. The first two words, En dónde, mean “where.”
(slow) En dón-de.
En dónde.
This is followed by está, which is a present tense form of the verb “to stay” or "to be located."
(slow) Es-tá.
Está.
And last we have el baño. That means “the bathroom.”
(slow) El ba-ño.
El baño.
Let’s hear the whole question one more time.
(slow) ¿En dónde está el baño?
¿En dónde está el baño?
If you are looking for the ladies’ room, just take the phrase we just learned ¿En dónde está el baño? and add at the end the phrase de mujeres. It will sound like this:
¿En dónde está el baño de mujeres?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿En dón-de es-tá el ba-ño de mu-je-res?
Once more:
¿En dónde está el baño de mujeres?
De mujeres means "of ladies’"
(slow) de mu-je-res.
De mujeres.
Let’s repeat the whole question.
(slow) ¿En dón-de es-tá el ba-ño de mu-je-res?
Once more:
¿En dónde está el baño de mujeres?
If you are looking for the mens’ room, just replace the words de mujeres which mean “of ladies’” with de hombres meaning “of men’s”.
(slow) de hom-bres.
De hombres.
So the sentence will be:
¿En dónde está el baño de hombres?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿En dón-de es-tá el ba-ño de hom-bres?
Once more:
¿En dónde está el baño de hombres?
Let’s hear both of the sentences one more time:
¿En dónde está el baño de mujeres?
¿En dónde está el baño de hombres?
There might be restrooms in Mexico where words are written on the doors. In this case, all you have to do is read the words. Let’s learn them.
The word Mujeres or Señoras indicates “women.”
(slow) Mu-je-res.
Mujeres.
(slow) Se-ño-ras.
Señoras.
The word Hombres, or Señores, is for “men”.
(slow) Hom-bres.
Hombres.
(slow) Se-ño-res.
Señores.
In Mexico, it may not be always simple to find a bathroom. Especially if you are on the street you will definitely want to ask “Where is the nearest toilet?” In Spanish that is translated as:
¿En dónde está el baño más cercano?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿En dón-de es-tá el ba-ño más cer-ca-no?
Once more:
¿En dónde está el baño más cercano?
The new words in this sentence are más cercano which is translated in English as “nearest” or "closest".
(slow) más cer-ca-no.
Más cercano.
Let’s hear the whole sentence again.
¿En dónde está el baño más cercano?
To close out today's lessons, we’d like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !buena suerte! which means “Good luck!” in Spanish.
