INTRODUCTION
Today’s phrase is something for all you shoppers out there. Today’s phrase is “How Much?”
GRAMMAR POINT
In Spanish, “How much?” is ¿Cuánto es?
¿Cuánto es?
Let’s break it down by syllable: ¿Cuán-to es?
Now, let’s hear it again, ¿Cuánto es?
Shopping at the market at an eatery, depending on your spending habits, this may be an extremely high-frequency phrase. The most rudimentary way of using “How much?” is pointing at something while saying ¿Cuánto es?
But let’s try and build this up a bit, shall we?
Let’s start with the expression, “How much is this?” which in Spanish is ¿Cuánto es esto?
The first word, cuánto means “how much.”
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: cuán-to.
Cuánto
This is followed by es, which means “is.”
es
And finally, we find “this” which in Spanish is esto.
Breaking it down: es-to.
And one more time, esto.
Looking at the word for “this,” warrants to look at the word for “that” which is eso.
e-so
One more time, eso.
The phrase “How much is that?” is ¿Cuánto es eso?
¿Cuánto es eso?
Let’s break it down by syllable: ¿Cuán-to es e-so?
And now, let’s hear it again, ¿Cuán-to es e-so?
While you will be understood, it might be better to go a bit further by using the phrase, ¿Cuánto cuesta esto?
¿Cuánto cuesta esto?
If you compare it with the previous phrases, you’ll see that we have substituted cuesta, which means “it cost” for es which means “is.” And in English, the phrase ¿Cuánto cuesta esto? means “How much does this cost?”
Let’s repeat slowly, ¿Cuánto cuesta esto?
Breaking it down by syllable: ¿Cuán-to cues-ta es-to?
Finally, one more time, ¿Cuánto cuesta esto?
If you substitute eso for esto, you will get the phrase ¿Cuánto cuesta eso? “How much does that cost?”
And if you substitute aquello for esto, you’ll get the phrase, ¿Cuánto cuesta aquello? “How much does that over there cost?”
