Lesson Transcript

Hi, everyone! I'm Risa from SpanishPod101.com.
Do you know how to say “Bye” in Spanish? In this lesson, you'll learn three parting expressions in Spanish.
Let’s start with the easiest one.
Adiós.
[slowly] Adiós.
This means "Goodbye" in Spanish.
The word adiós is the English equivalent of "goodbye." It translates literally to "go with God." You would use this phrase when speaking with someone you aren't going to see again.
If you know that you are going to see the person again, there's a different phrase you should use.
Hasta mañana.
[slowly] Hasta mañana.
This means "See you tomorrow" in Spanish.
If you do plan on seeing the person again, you would use the phrase Hasta mañana, which translates roughly to "I'll see you tomorrow."
If you are not sure when you will see the other person, but you want to sound friendly, here's a phrase for you.
Hasta luego.
[slowly] Hasta luego.
This means "See you later" in Spanish.
If you plan on seeing the person again soon but you are not sure when, you would use the phrase Hasta luego. Luego means "later," so it means "I'll see you later."
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me.
"Goodbye."
Adiós.

Adiós.
"See you tomorrow."
Hasta mañana.

Hasta mañana.
"See you later."
Hasta luego.

Hasta luego.
Well done! [pause] Here's a fun fact!
Even if you don't plan on seeing the person again, it sounds nicer to say Hasta luego rather than adiós. Some situations where you can use the phrase Hasta luego include getting out of a taxi or when leaving a store, hotel, or restaurant.
You just learned how to say “Bye” in three different ways in Spanish.
