INTRODUCTION
Michael: Hi everyone, I'm Michael.
Laura: And I'm Laura.
Michael: And welcome to Must-Know Medical Spanish Sentence Structures. Physical Examination, Part 2.
Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for communicating to your patient what you are about to do during a physical examination.
PATTERN
Michael: First, let’s look at the Spanish sentence for, "I'm going to take your blood pressure."
Laura: Le voy a medir la presión sanguínea.
Laura: [slow] Le voy a medir la presión sanguínea.
Michael: The pattern for communicating to your patient what you are about to do during a physical examination has three elements. First, the phrase meaning "I'm going to" in this context.
Laura: le voy a, [slow] le voy a, [normal] le voy a.
Michael: Second, the verb meaning literally "to measure," but in more natural English it translates as "to take."
Laura: medir, [slow] medir, [normal] medir.
Michael: And last, the parameter that you are about to measure during the physical examination — "blood pressure."
Laura: la presión sanguínea, [slow] la presión sanguínea, [normal] la presión sanguínea.
Michael: Altogether, we have... "I'm going to take your blood pressure."
Laura: Le voy a medir la presión sanguínea. [slow] Le voy a medir la presión sanguínea. [normal] Le voy a medir la presión sanguínea.
Michael: Here’s another example meaning, "I'm going to take your temperature." First, the phrase meaning "I'm going to" in this context.

Michael: And last, the parameter that you are about to measure during the physical examination — "temperature."
Laura: la temperatura, [slow] la temperatura, [normal] la temperatura.
Michael: Altogether we have...
Laura: Le voy a medir la temperatura. [slow] Le voy a medir la temperatura. [normal] Le voy a medir la temperatura.
Michael: "I'm going to take your temperature."
[pause]
Laura: Le voy a medir la temperatura.
Michael: The sentence pattern is,
Laura: Le voy a medir + [measurement you are about to take].
Michael: “I'm going to take your + [measurement you are about to take]”.
Laura: Le voy a medir + [measurement you are about to take].
PRACTICE
Michael: Let’s practice,
Michael: Imagine you’re examining a patient and you want to take his pulse.
Michael: Use the sentence pattern to say “I'm going to take your pulse.” “Pulse” is

Laura: el nivel de oxígeno, [slow] el nivel de oxígeno, el nivel de oxígeno.
[pause]
Laura: Le voy a medir el nivel de oxígeno. [slow] Le voy a medir el nivel de oxígeno. Le voy a medir el nivel de oxígeno.
