INTRODUCTION
Michael: Hi everyone, I'm Michael.
Laura: And I'm Laura.
Michael: And welcome to Must-Know Medical Spanish Sentence Structures. Past Medical History. Medication History.
Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for asking your patient about the medications they are taking.
PATTERN
Michael: First, let’s look at the Spanish sentence for, "Do you take any medication for high blood pressure?"
Laura: ¿Toma algún medicamento para la presión alta?
Laura: [slow] ¿Toma algún medicamento para la presión alta?
Michael: The pattern for asking your patient about the medications they are taking has four elements. First, the verb meaning “do [you] take.” Note how the “you” is omitted from the Spanish sentence, because in Spanish the subject is implied by how the verb is conjugated.
Laura: toma, [slow] toma, [normal] toma.
Michael: Second, the phrase meaning “any medication.”
Laura: algún medicamento, [slow] algún medicamento, [normal] algún medicamento.
Michael: Next comes the preposition meaning “for.”
Laura: para, [slow] para, [normal] para.
Michael: And last, the reason for which the medication is prescribed – "high blood pressure."
Laura: la presión alta, [slow] la presión alta, [normal] la presión alta.
Michael: Altogether, we have... "Do you take any medication for high blood pressure?"
Laura: ¿Toma algún medicamento para la presión alta? [slow] ¿Toma algún medicamento para la presión alta? [normal] ¿Toma algún medicamento para la presión alta?
Michael: Here’s another example meaning, "Do you take any medication for stomach acidity?" First, the verb meaning “do [you] take.”
Laura: toma
Michael: Second, the phrase meaning “any medication.”
Laura: algún medicamento
Michael: Next comes, the preposition meaning “for.”
Laura: para
Michael: And last, the reason for which the medication is prescribed – "stomach acidity."
Laura: el ácido estomacal, [slow] el ácido estomacal, [normal] el ácido estomacal.
Michael: Altogether we have...
Laura: ¿Toma algún medicamento para el ácido estomacal? [slow] ¿Toma algún medicamento para el ácido estomacal? [normal] ¿Toma algún medicamento para el ácido estomacal?
Michael: "Do you take any medication for stomach acidity?"

Laura: ¿Toma algún medicamento para el ácido estomacal?
Michael: The sentence pattern is,
Laura: Toma algún medicamento para + [reason for which a medication is prescribed].
Michael: “Do you take any medication for + [reason for which a medication is prescribed]”.
Laura: Toma algún medicamento para + [reason for which a medication is prescribed].

Michael: Imagine you’re asking your patient if they take any medication to treat their allergies.
Michael: Use the sentence pattern to say “Do you take any medication for allergies?” “Allergies” is
