INTRODUCTION
Michael: Hi everyone, I'm Michael.
Laura: And I'm Laura.
Michael: And welcome to Must-Know Medical Spanish Sentence Structures. Review of Systems. Psychiatric Disorders.
Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for asking your patient about the psychiatric signs and symptoms they are presenting.
PATTERN
Michael: First, let’s look at the Spanish sentence for, "Have you thought about hurting yourself?"
Laura: ¿Ha pensado en hacerse daño a sí mismo?
Laura: [slow] ¿Ha pensado en hacerse daño a sí mismo?
Michael: The pattern for asking your patient about the signs and symptoms they have presented has two elements. First, the verb meaning "have [you]." Note how the "you" is omitted from the Spanish sentence, because in Spanish the subject is implied by how the verb is conjugated.
Laura: ha, [slow] ha, [normal] ha.
Michael: And last, the signs and symptoms you are asking the patient about – "thought about hurting yourself."
Laura: pensado en hacerse daño a sí mismo, [slow] pensado en hacerse daño a sí mismo, [normal] pensado en hacerse daño a sí mismo.
Michael: Altogether, we have... "Have you thought about hurting yourself?"
Laura: ¿Ha pensado en hacerse daño a sí mismo? [slow] ¿Ha pensado en hacerse daño a sí mismo? [normal] ¿Ha pensado en hacerse daño a sí mismo?
Michael: Here’s another example meaning, "Have you thought about hurting another person?" First, the verb "have [you]."
Laura: ha
Michael: And last, the signs and symptoms you are asking the patient about – in this case, "thought about hurting another person."
Laura: pensado en hacerle daño a otra persona, [slow] pensado en hacerle daño a otra persona, [normal] pensado en hacerle daño a otra persona.
Michael: Altogether we have...
Laura: ¿Ha pensado en hacerle daño a otra persona? [slow] ¿Ha pensado en hacerle daño a otra persona? [normal] ¿Ha pensado en hacerle daño a otra persona?
Michael: "Have you thought about hurting another person?"
[pause]
Laura: ¿Ha pensado en hacerle daño a otra persona?
Michael: The sentence pattern is,
Laura: Ha + [Sign or Symptom].
Michael: "Have you + [Sign or Symptom]".
Laura: Ha + [Sign or Symptom].
PRACTICE
Michael: Let’s practice.
Michael: Imagine you’re questioning your patient about the psychiatric symptoms they have presented.
Michael: Use the sentence pattern to say "Have you seen things that others cannot see?" "Seen things that others cannot see" is
Laura: visto cosas que otras personas no pueden ver [slow] visto cosas que otras personas no pueden ver [normal] visto cosas que otras personas no pueden ver.

Laura: ¿Ha visto cosas que otras personas no pueden ver? [slow] ¿Ha visto cosas que otras personas no pueden ver? [normal] ¿Ha visto cosas que otras personas no pueden ver?

Michael: Now imagine you are asking your patient "Have you heard voices?" "Heard voices" is
Laura: oido voces, [slow] oido voces, oido voces.

Laura: ¿Ha oido voces? [slow] ¿Ha oido voces? ¿Ha oido voces?

Laura: ¿Ha oido voces?
Michael: Let’s hear some more examples,
Michael: "Have you had depression?"
Laura: ¿Ha tenido depresión?
Laura: ¿Ha tenido depresión?
Michael: "Have you had anxiety?"
Laura: ¿Ha tenido ansiedad?
Laura: ¿Ha tenido ansiedad?
Michael: "Have you had a psychiatric illness?"
Laura: ¿Ha tenido una enfermedad psiquiátrica?
Laura: ¿Ha tenido una enfermedad psiquiátrica?
Michael: "Have you been hospitalized for a psychiatric reason?"
Laura: ¿Ha estado hospitalizado por alguna razón psiquiátrica?

Michael: "Have you thought about ending your life?"
