Michael: Hi everyone, I'm Michael.
Laura: And I'm Laura.
Michael: And welcome to Must-Know Medical Spanish Sentence Structures. Patient Follow Up.
Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving instructions to your patient about when to look for medical assistance if something goes wrong.
PATTERN
Michael: First, let’s look at the Spanish sentence for, "See your doctor if you have trouble breathing."
Laura: Vea a su médico si tiene dificultad para respirar.
Laura: [slow] Vea a su médico si tiene dificultad para respirar.
Michael: The pattern for advising a patient to look for medical assistance has five elements. First, the verb "see" in the imperative, formal register form.
Laura: vea, [slow] vea, [normal] vea-
Michael: Second, the phrase meaning, in this context, "your."
Laura: a su, [slow] a su, [normal] a su.
Michael: Third, the word meaning "doctor."
Laura: médico, [slow] médico, [normal] médico.
Michael: Then, the word meaning "if."
Laura: si, [slow] si, [normal] si.
Michael: And last, the signs or symptoms that the patient should monitor — "you have trouble breathing."
Laura: tiene dificultad para respirar, [slow] tiene dificultad para respirar, [normal] tiene dificultad para respirar.
Michael: Altogether, we have... "See your doctor if you have trouble breathing."
Laura: Vea a su médico si tiene dificultad para respirar. [slow] Vea a su médico si tiene dificultad para respirar. [normal] Vea a su médico si tiene dificultad para respirar.
Michael: Here’s another example meaning, "See your doctor if the fever doesn't go away in two days." First, the verb "see" in the imperative, formal register form.
Laura: vea
Michael: Second, the phrase meaning in this context "your."
Laura: a su
Michael: Third, the word meaning "doctor."
Laura: médico
Michael: Then, the word meaning "if."
Laura: si
Michael: And last, the signs or symptoms that the patient should monitor — in this case, "the fever doesn't go away in two days."
Laura: no se le quita la fiebre en dos días, [slow] no se le quita la fiebre en dos días, [normal] no se le quita la fiebre en dos días.

Michael: The sentence pattern is,
Laura: Vea a su médico si + [Symptom the patient should monitor].
Michael: “See your doctor if + [Symptom the patient should monitor]”.
Laura: Vea a su médico si + [Symptom the patient should monitor].

Michael: Use the sentence pattern to say “See your doctor if you are not better in two days.” “You are not better in two days” is
