Michael: Hi everyone, I'm Michael.
Laura: And I'm Laura.
Michael: And welcome to Must-Know Medical Spanish Sentence Structures. Communicating a Diagnosis.
Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for communicating a diagnosis to your patient.
PATTERN
Michael: First, let’s look at the Spanish sentence for, "You have a bacterial infection."
Laura: Usted tiene una infección bacterial.
Laura: [slow] Usted tiene una infección bacterial.
Michael: The pattern for communicating a diagnosis to your patient has three elements. First, the word meaning "you" in the formal register.
Laura: usted, [slow] usted, [normal] usted.
Michael: Second, the verb "to have" in the second person, formal register form.
Laura: tiene, [slow] tiene, [normal] tiene.
Michael: Third, the diagnosis you are giving — in this case, "a bacterial infection."
Laura: una infección bacterial, [slow] una infección bacterial, [normal] una infección bacterial.
Michael: Altogether, we have... "You have a bacterial infection."
Laura: Usted tiene una infección bacterial. [slow] Usted tiene una infección bacterial. [normal] Usted tiene una infección bacterial.
Michael: Here’s another example meaning, "You have a throat infection." First, the word meaning "you" in the formal register.
Laura: usted
Michael: Second, the verb "to have" in the second person, formal register form.
Laura: tiene
Michael: Third, the diagnosis you are giving — "a throat infection."
Laura: una infección de garganta, [slow] una infección de garganta, [normal] una infección de garganta.

Michael: The sentence pattern is,
Laura: Usted tiene + [Diagnosis].
Michael: “You have + [Diagnosis].”
Laura: Usted tiene + [Diagnosis].

Michael: Use the sentence pattern to say “You have a viral infection.” “A viral infection” is
