| PATTERN |
| Michael: First, let’s look at the Spanish sentence for, "You need stitches." |
| Laura: Usted necesita puntadas. |
| Laura: [slow] Usted necesita puntadas. |
| Michael: The pattern for describing something that needs to be done has three elements. First, the word meaning "you" in the formal register. |
| Laura: usted, [slow] usted, [normal] usted. |
| Michael: Second, the verb "need" in the second person, formal register form. |
| Laura: necesita, [slow] necesita, [normal] necesita. |
| Michael: Third, the actual indication — "stitches." |
| Laura: puntadas, [slow] puntadas, [normal] puntadas. |
| Michael: Altogether, we have... "You need stitches." |
| Laura: Usted necesita puntadas. [slow] Usted necesita puntadas. [normal] Usted necesita puntadas. |
| Michael: Here’s another example meaning, "You need to see a specialist." First, the word meaning "you" in the formal register. |
