Eric: Expressions that Involve Food
Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to SpanishPod101.com. I'm Eric.
Anna: And I'm Anna!
Eric: This is Must-Know Spanish Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 17. In this lesson you'll learn Expressions that Involve Food.
Eric: Food can also be a subject of our expressions, and here you'll see that these can take on a different meaning in a new context.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Eric: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Anna: ser pan comido
Anna: importar un pimiento
Anna: pasárselo pipa
Anna: irse a freír espárragos
Eric: Anna, what's our first expression?
Anna: ser pan comido
Eric: literally meaning "be eaten bread." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "be really easy, a piece of cake."
Anna: [SLOW] ser pan comido [NORMAL] ser pan comido
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.
Anna: ser pan comido

Eric: Use this slang expression when you're talking about something that is really easy to do.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Cocinar huevos fritos es pan comido. [SLOW] Cocinar huevos fritos es pan comido.
Eric: "Cooking fried eggs is a piece of cake."
Anna: [NORMAL] Cocinar huevos fritos es pan comido.
Eric: Okay, what's the next expression?
Anna: importar un pimiento
Eric: literally meaning "to matter a pepper." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to not care at all."
Anna: [SLOW] importar un pimiento [NORMAL] importar un pimiento
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.

Eric: Use this slang expression when you want to say that you don't care about something. Be careful when you use this expression, as it's quite harsh and people usually use it when they are angry.
Anna: Sometimes instead of “pimiento” you can hear the same expression with “pepino”.
Eric : So cucumbers are also an option. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Me importa un pimiento lo que le pase a tu madre, tú y yo ya no tenemos nada. [SLOW] Me importa un pimiento lo que le pase a tu madre, tú y yo ya no tenemos nada.
Eric: "I don't even care what happens to your mother, you and I no longer have a relationship."
Anna: [NORMAL] Me importa un pimiento lo que le pase a tu madre, tú y yo ya no tenemos nada.
Eric: Okay, what's our next expression?
Anna: pasárselo pipa
Eric: literally meaning "to pass it like pipe." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "to have a lot of fun."
Anna: [SLOW] pasárselo pipa [NORMAL] pasárselo pipa

Eric: Use this slang expression when you want to express that you're having lots of fun doing something. A similar expression is -
Anna: pasárselo chachi.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Parece que los niños se lo pasan pipa en el parque. [SLOW] Parece que los niños se lo pasan pipa en el parque.
Eric: "It seems that the kids are having lots of fun in the park."
Anna: [NORMAL] Parece que los niños se lo pasan pipa en el parque.
Eric: Okay, what's the last expression?
Anna: irse a freír espárragos
Eric: literally meaning "go to fry asparagus." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "go to hell."
Anna: [SLOW] irse a freír espárragos [NORMAL] irse a freír espárragos
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.
Anna: irse a freír espárragos

Eric: Use this slang expression when you want to say "go to hell" to someone in a softer way. However, it has the same meaning. Be careful when you use this expression, as anybody can feel offended.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Anna: [NORMAL] Lo mandé a freír espárragos cuando entró con otra chica en mi bar. [SLOW] Lo mandé a freír espárragos cuando entró con otra chica en mi bar.
Eric: "I told him to go to hell when he came with another girl to my bar."
Anna: [NORMAL] Lo mandé a freír espárragos cuando entró con otra chica en mi bar.
