INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 5. Letting others know what someone is doing.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for letting others know what someone is doing.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I'm studying Spanish."
Alex: Yo estoy estudiando español.
Alex: [slow] Yo estoy estudiando español.
Eric: The pattern for letting others know what someone is doing has four elements. First comes the pronoun, "I."
Alex: Yo.
Eric: Second, the verb "to be" conjugated in the first person singular form.
Alex: estoy.
Eric: Third, the gerund form of the verb, "studying."
Alex: estudiando.
Eric: And last, the complement, "Spanish."
Alex: español.
Eric: Altogether, we have.."I'm studying Spanish."
Alex: Yo estoy estudiando español. [slow] Yo estoy estudiando español. [normal] Yo estoy estudiando español.
Eric: Using the pronoun will emphasize the subject for the sentence but can be omitted if the subject has already been established, or if the context makes it obvious who or what you are talking about. You use the verb "to be" in the present indicative directly followed by a gerund to express that the action is happening in the present. The complement can be anything that gives more details about what someone is doing - noun, noun phrase, adjective, adverb, and so on.
Alex: Yo estoy estudiando español.
Eric: So remember that to let others know what someone is doing, first give the pronoun, plus the verb "to be" in present indicative, followed by a gerund, plus a complement.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "He is talking on the phone." First comes the pronoun, "He."
Alex: Él.
Eric: Second is the verb "to be" conjugated in the third person singular form.
Alex: está.
Eric: Third, the gerund form of the verb, "talking."
Alex: hablando.
Eric: And last, the complement, "on the phone."
Alex: por teléfono.
Eric: Altogether we have..
Alex: Él está hablando por teléfono. [slow] Él está hablando por teléfono. [normal] Él está hablando por teléfono.
Eric: "He is talking on the phone."
[pause]
Alex: Él está hablando por teléfono.
Eric: How do you say - "They are eating nachos?" To give you a hint, "eating" is..
Alex: comiendo. [slow] comiendo. [normal] comiendo.
Eric: They are eating nachos.
[pause]
Alex: Ellos están comiendo nachos. [slow] Ellos están comiendo nachos. [normal] Ellos están comiendo nachos.
[pause]
Alex: Ellos están comiendo nachos.
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Spanish. Here we go.
Eric: "I'm studying Spanish."
[pause]
Alex: Yo estoy estudiando español.
[pause]
Alex: Yo estoy estudiando español.
Eric: "He is talking on the phone."
[pause]
Alex: Él está hablando por teléfono.
[pause]
Alex: Él está hablando por teléfono.
Eric: "They are eating nachos."
[pause]
Alex: Ellos están comiendo nachos.
[pause]
Alex: Ellos están comiendo nachos.
