INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 25. Using Conditionals.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for using conditionals with "if."
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "If you buy one, they give you one more free."
Alex: Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis.
Alex: [slow] Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis.
Eric: The pattern for using conditionals with "if" has 3 elements. First, "If."
Alex: Si.
Eric: Second, clause A in present indicative. In this example, that’s "you buy one."
Alex: compras uno.
Eric: Third, clause B in present indicative. "They give you one more free."
Alex: te regalan otro gratis.
Eric: Altogether, we have... "If you buy one, they give you one more free. "
Alex: Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis. [slow] Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis. [normal] Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis.
Eric: Start with the word "if."
Alex: si
Eric: Then add a clause with a verb conjugated in the present indicative. This is followed by a second clause with a verb that can be conjugated either in the future tense or present of the indicative. The second clause demonstrates a consequence of the first clause.
Alex: Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis.
Eric: So remember: To use conditionals, start with the word "if." In Spanish, this is...
Alex: si
Eric: Then add two clauses. The first one must contain a verb in the present indicative. The second clause demonstrates the consequence of the first. It can have a verb in either the future tense or present indicative.
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "If you bring a friend, we will give you a discount." First, "if."
Alex: Si.
Eric: Second, clause A in present indicative. "You bring a friend."
Alex: traes a un amigo.
Eric: Third, clause B in future tense. "We will give you a discount."
Alex: te daremos un descuento.
Eric: Altogether we have...
Alex: Si traes a un amigo, te daremos un descuento. [slow] Si traes a un amigo, te daremos un descuento. [normal] Si traes a un amigo, te daremos un descuento.
Eric: "If you bring a friend, we will give you a discount."
[pause]
Alex: Si traes a un amigo, te daremos un descuento.
Eric: How do you say - "If you go out, you will be cold" To give you a hint, "you will be cold" is...
Alex: vas a tener frío. [slow] vas a tener frío. [normal] vas a tener frío.
Eric: "If you go out, you will be cold"
[pause]
Alex: Si sales vas a tener frío. [slow] Si sales vas a tener frío. [normal] Si sales vas a tener frío.
[pause]
Alex: Si sales vas a tener frío.
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I’ll give you the English equivalent of the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud in Spanish. Here we go.
Eric: "If you buy one, they give you one more free. "
[pause]
Alex: Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis.
[pause]
Alex: Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis.
Eric: "If you bring a friend, we will give you a discount."

[pause]
Alex: Si sales vas a tener frío.
[pause]

Outro

Eric: Okay. That's all for this lesson and this series. You learned a pattern for expressing conditionals using "if," as in...
Alex: Si compras uno, te regalan otro gratis.
Eric: meaning "If you buy one, they give you one more free. "
Eric: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on SpanishPod101.com. Thanks everyone, and see you in another series!
Alex: Hasta la próxima.
