INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 17. Giving Advice.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving advice.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "You should practice more often."
Alex: Deberías practicar más seguido.
Alex: [slow] Deberías practicar más seguido.
Eric: The pattern for giving advice has 3 elements. First, "You should."
Alex: Deberías.
Eric: Second, the verb in infinitive form "practice."
Alex: practicar.
Eric: Third, the complement "more often."
Alex: más seguido.
Eric: Altogether, we have... "You should practice more often."
Alex: Deberías practicar más seguido. [slow] Deberías practicar más seguido. [normal] Deberías practicar más seguido.
Eric: Start with the verb
Alex: deberías
Eric: meaning “you should.” This is a verb conjugated in the conditional form second person singular. Then, add a verb in its infinitive form followed by more details—a noun, adverb, or phrase.
Alex: Deberías practicar más seguido.
Eric: So remember: To give advice, start with the verb
Alex: deberías
Eric: add a verb in its infinitive form, and end with a complement.
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "You should learn a new language." First, "You should."
Alex: Deberías.
Eric: Second, the verb in infinitive form "learn."
Alex: aprender.
Eric: Third, the complement "a new language."
Alex: un idioma nuevo.
Eric: Altogether we have...
Alex: Deberías aprender un idioma nuevo. [slow] Deberías aprender un idioma nuevo. [normal] Deberías aprender un idioma nuevo.
Eric: "You should learn a new language."
[pause]
Alex: Deberías aprender un idioma nuevo.
Eric: How do you say - "You should go running with me." To give you a hint, "running with me" is...
Alex: correr conmigo. [slow] correr conmigo. [normal] correr conmigo.
Eric: "You should go running with me."
[pause]
Alex: Deberías ir a correr conmigo. [slow] Deberías ir a correr conmigo. [normal] Deberías ir a correr conmigo.
