INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 13. Asking for a Reason.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern to ask for a reason.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "Why are you always late?"
Alex: ¿Por qué llegas siempre tarde?
Alex: [slow] ¿Por qué llegas siempre tarde?
Eric: The pattern for asking for a reason has 3 elements. First, "Why."
Alex: Por qué.
Eric: Second, the conjugated verb "you arrive."
Alex: llegas.
Eric: Third, the complement "always late."
Alex: siempre tarde.
Eric: Altogether, we have... "Why are you always late?"
Alex: ¿Por qué llegas siempre tarde? [slow] ¿Por qué llegas siempre tarde? [normal] ¿Por qué llegas siempre tarde?
Eric: Start with the word "why,"
Alex: por qué
Eric: and follow it with the conjugated verb for which you want an explanation. At the end, you can add more information that will complement the action, such as: a noun, adverb, or noun phrase.
Alex: ¿Por qué llegas siempre tarde?
Eric: So remember to ask for a reason, start with the word "why," followed by a conjugated verb, and end with a complement for more details.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Why do I have to go?" First, "Why."
Alex: Por qué.
Eric: Second, the conjugated verb "I have."
Alex: tengo.
Eric: Third, the complement "to go."
Alex: que ir.

Alex: ¿Por qué tengo que ir? [slow] ¿Por qué tengo que ir? [normal] ¿Por qué tengo que ir?
Eric: "Why do I have to go?"
[pause]
Alex: ¿Por qué tengo que ir?
Eric: How do you say - "Why do you run every morning?" To give you a hint, "every morning" is...
Alex: todas las mañanas. [slow] todas las mañanas. [normal] todas las mañanas.
Eric: "Why do you run every morning?"
[pause]
Alex: ¿Por qué corres todas las mañanas? [slow] ¿Por qué corres todas las mañanas? [normal] ¿Por qué corres todas las mañanas?
[pause]
Alex: ¿Por qué corres todas las mañanas?
