INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Alex: And I'm Alex.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Spanish Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 1. Talking about your profession.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about your profession.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I'm a lawyer."
Alex: Yo soy abogada.
Alex: [slow] Yo soy abogada.
Eric: The pattern for talking about your profession has 3 elements. First, a pronoun, in this case "I."
Alex: Yo.
Eric: Second, the verb "to be" conjugated in the first person singular.
Alex: soy.
Eric: Third, your profession, in this case "lawyer," referring to a female speaker.
Alex: abogada.
Eric: Altogether, we have "I'm a lawyer."
Alex: Yo soy abogada. [slow] Yo soy abogada. [normal] Yo soy abogada.
Eric: In Spanish, the pronoun can be omitted if it is obvious to whom you are referring. But if you want to emphasize, you can include the pronoun at the beginning of the sentence. Then comes the verb "to be," conjugated according to the pronoun. At the end comes the profession, which is a noun inflected as you would do with adjectives in Spanish; it is modified by the gender and number of the subject. Note that in Spanish the article "a/ an" is not included before the profession.
Alex: Yo soy abogada.
Eric: So remember, when you talk about your profession, just say "I", plus the verb "to be," plus profession. Be aware of the speaker's gender.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I am a physician." First is the pronoun, in this case "I."
Alex: Yo.
Eric: Second, the verb "to be."
Alex: soy.
Eric: Third, your profession, in this case, "physician," referring to a male speaker.
Alex: médico.
Eric: Altogether we have..
Alex: Yo soy médico. [slow] Yo soy médico. [normal] Yo soy médico.
Eric: "I am a physician."
[pause]
Alex: Yo soy médico.
Eric: How do you say - "I am a teacher"? To give you a hint, "teacher" is..
Alex: maestro. [slow] maestro. [normal] maestro.
Eric: I am a teacher.
[pause]
Alex: Yo soy maestro. [slow] Yo soy maestro. [normal] Yo soy maestro.
[pause]
Alex: Yo soy maestro.
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Spanish. Here we go.
Eric: "I'm a lawyer."
[pause]
Alex: Yo soy abogada.
[pause]
Alex: Yo soy abogada.
Eric: "I am a physician."
[pause]
Alex: Yo soy médico.
[pause]
Alex: Yo soy médico.
Eric: "I am a teacher."
[pause]
Alex: Yo soy maestro.
[pause]

OUTRO
Eric: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for talking about your profession, as in..
Alex: Yo soy abogada.
Eric: ...meaning "I'm a lawyer." You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on SpanishPod101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time!
