Eric: This is Must-Know Mexican Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 5. In this lesson you'll learn Expressions to Fill in Silence.
Eric: These will come in handy in case you are left speechless after someone's comment.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Eric: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Laura: ¡chin!
Laura: ¿a poco?
Laura: órale
Laura: no inventes
Eric: Laura, what's our first expression?
Laura: ¡chin!
Eric: When it's used as a slang expression it means "damn it."
Laura: [SLOW] ¡chin! [NORMAL] ¡chin!
Eric: Listeners, please repeat.
Laura: ¡chin!

Eric: Use this slang expression when you want to express sudden disappointment or anger.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Laura: [NORMAL] ¡Chin! Se me olvidó la tarea. [SLOW] ¡Chin! Se me olvidó la tarea.
Eric: "Damn it! I forgot my homework. "
Laura: [NORMAL] ¡Chin! Se me olvidó la tarea.
Eric: Okay, what's the next expression?
Laura: ¿a poco?
Eric: literally meaning "by little?" But when it's used as a slang expression it means "for real?"
Laura: [SLOW] ¿a poco? [NORMAL] ¿a poco?

Eric: Use this slang expression when you want to express doubt or disbelief.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Laura: [NORMAL] ¿A poco sí renunciaste? [SLOW] ¿A poco sí renunciaste?
Eric: "Did you really quit?"
Laura: [NORMAL] ¿A poco sí renunciaste?
Eric: Okay, what's our next expression?
Laura: órale
Eric: When it's used as a slang expression it means "wow, alright."
Laura: [SLOW] órale [NORMAL] órale

Eric: Use this slang expression when you want to express amazement. You can also use this phrase to agree with something.
Eric : Now let's hear an example sentence.

Eric: "Wow. I didn't know that."
Laura: [NORMAL] Órale. No sabía eso.
Eric: Okay, what's the last expression?
Laura: no inventes
Eric: literally meaning "do not invent." But when it's used as a slang expression it means "for real?, stop joking."

Eric: Use this slang expression when you want to express surprise, if you can't believe what you are being told or when you want someone to stop joking.

Eric: "For real? Are you allowed to go?"
