Hi, everyone! My name is Courtney and today, we’re going to explore the beautiful town of Taxco. |
The city of Taxco lies on very rugged terrain and has steep irregular streets. Most streets are paved with dark stones and decorated with limes, pictures and even statues. |
Taxco is a town that is well known for its production of silver as well as its picturesque Spanish-style landscapes. Today, I’ll be taking you through this town that is filled with culture and history. |
This town is located 106 miles southwest of Mexico City. It’s name, Taxco, is most likely derived from the Nahuatl name Tlachco which means “place of the ballgame.” Its full name, Taxco de Alarcón is named after this big-headed guy who was not only a writer, but also a native of this town. |
This town carries a lot of handmade artwork ranging from masks to jewelry to pottery and much more. Taxco is most famous for its custom shop of silver where people here will transform the silver into beautiful different pieces of sculptures and jewelry. Along the way, travelling throughout the town, you’ll find many cool stores like this one behind me. Let’s go inside and see if we can find any cool pieces that must be very cheap. |
Silver was discovered by the Spanish around 1532 which started commercial silver mining in the area. Famous for silversmithing, tourism became a major economic force in Taxco. |
Later in the evening, you can find many vendors selling their homemade pan dulce or in English, “sweet bread” which is the name for a variety of Mexican pastries. It’s very sweet, very good. |
While exploring Taxco, you’ll notice that many of the buildings here consist of a traditional architecture which means white paint and red roofs. This allows for a very unique experience here. |
The streets also generally lack sidewalks making them a pleasant view, but quite dangerous. |
Now, we’re going to be heading to the church which is over 250 years old. The parish of Santa Prisca in San Sebastian commonly referred to as the Santa Prisca Church is located on the east side of the main plaza of Taxco. It was built between 1751 and 1758 by José de la Borda who had made a great fortune in the silver mines around the town. It is built with pink stone and has two tall towers. Inside, there are a number of floor-to-ceiling altar pieces that are all covered in gold. |
Now, it’s time for some dinner. We are going to try Pozole which is a traditional Mexican dish that originated from Mesoamerica. Pozole normally consists of pork with garbanzo beans and different kinds of spices. This one in particular also has avocado and chicharrone which is also known as pork rinds. |
The town’s main plaza officially called Plaza Borda after José de la Borda is commonly referred to as the Zocalo. The main plaza is surrounded by silver shops, restaurants and bars. |
So guys, this was just a little taste of Taxco. I hope you enjoyed it and we’ll see you soon. |
