Gina: Hi everyone, I'm Gina.
Lucia: And I'm Lucia!
Gina: And welcome to Culture Class Essential Spanish Vocabulary, Lesson 15! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to recreation and leisure. These are five popular Peruvian tourist attractions and places, hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at SpanishPod101.com.

Gina: Lucia, what’s our first attraction?
Lucia: Machu Picchu

Gina:
Machu Picchu is the most famous tourist attraction in Peru. It’s located in the province of Cusco and is also one of the seven wonders of the world. It was built by the Incas and never found by the Spanish during their conquest. The ruins are of great importance because they remain relatively intact.

Gina:
Titicaca lake is the largest in South America and it’s called the highest navigable lake in the world with a surface elevation of 3,812 meters. It’s famous for the Uros Islands, which are located on the lake. The Uros Islands are 44 artificial islands made of floating reeds, or totora, that are home of traditional families of the zone.

Gina:
The Nazca lines are a series of designs drawn in the ground in the Nazca Desert, and named so after the ancient Nazca Culture. Figures like hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks, orcas, and lizards can be seen in the drawings in the desert from a plane.

Chan Chan is a pre-Columbian city. It’s the largest in South America and the largest city made of adobe in the world. Located in the now department of Trujillo, Chan Chan was built by the kingdom of Chimú, which was conquered by the Inca Empire.

Manu National Park is a protected area located in Madre de Dios and is the largest national park in Peru. It has one of highest levels of biodiversity of any park in the world with more than 15,000 species of plants, up to 250 varieties of trees, and over 1,000 species of birds.
