Lucia: And I'm Lucia!
Gina: And welcome to Culture Class Essential Spanish Vocabulary, Lesson 13! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to recreation and leisure. These are five popular Peruvian sports, hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at SpanishPod101.com.

Soccer is the most popular sport in Peru. The two major clubs with a history of rivalry are Alianza Lima and Universitario de deportes. Though in recent years other clubs have had international recognition, these two remain very popular in Peru.

Women’s volleyball is the second most popular sport in Peru. The Peruvian volleyball team has been recognized internationally over the years, and they are famous for their very strict team coaches.

Around the 1950s, a Peruvian was recognized as the second best tennis player in the world. Even though tennis is not a popular sport in the country, Peruvians have gained some international recognition over the years.

Basketball is a very popular sport played between schools in tournaments. Peruvians believe that if one practices basketball at a young age, one can gain a little extra centimeters in height.
