Intro

Hi, everyone, I’m Yesenia from SpanishPod101.com. In this video, we’ll be talking about the Top 10 Phrases That Parents Always Say. Let’s begin!
PHRASE 1
[Normal] Tenga cuidado. [Slow] Tenga cuidado.
"Be careful."
Any time a parent sees their children doing something SLIGHTLY dangerous, they will say Tenga cuidado!
PHRASE 2
[Normal] Cállate. [Slow] Cállate.
"Be quiet."
Kids are usually noisy, so parents often tell children to be quiet by saying Cállate! which is the imperative of callarse.
PHRASE 3
[Normal] Compórtate. [Slow] Compórtate.
"Behave."
This is the command form of the verb comportarse. It implies that the child is not behaving properly. For example, parents will say Compórtate! if their kids are being too noisy at a dinner party.
PHRASE 4
[Normal] ¡Haz tu tarea! [Slow] ¡Haz tu tarea!
"Do your homework!"
Also, this one is in command form. So, for example, when children have been playing video games for too long, their parents would order them ¡Haz tu tarea!
PHRASE 5
[Normal] Vete a dormir. [Slow] Vete a dormir.
"Go to bed."
When their kid is up too late, that's what a parent would say.
PHRASE 6
[Normal] Voy a contar hasta tres. [Slow] Voy a contar hasta tres.
"I'm going to count to three."
This is a classic! The expression Voy a contar hasta tres is a way to make kids feel afraid of something that's going to happen. It usually goes like this: Voy a contar hasta tres. Uno, dos, ...tres!
PHRASE 7
[Normal] Parale. [Slow] Parale.
"Stop."
You can use this anytime someone is doing a thing that you do not want them to do, and not only with children.
PHRASE 8
[Normal] ¿Qué dijiste? [Slow] ¿Qué dijiste?
"What did you say?"
When the child has said something bad to the parent, the parent can go ¿Qué dijiste? It's like saying "I dare you to say it again!"
PHRASE 9
[Normal] ¿Qué acabo de decir? [Slow] ¿Qué acabo de decir?
"What did I just say?"
When the parent gives a command but the child doesn't do it, the parent, with a stronger voice this time, will say, ¿Qué acabo de decir? That's an expression that means "Were you listening to me? And if you were listening to me, why aren't you doing the thing that I told you to do?" So it's a bit of a scary one!
PHRASE 10
[Normal] ¿Te cepillaste los dientes? [Slow] ¿Te cepillaste los dientes?
"Did you brush your teeth?"
Usually, children don't like brushing their teeth, so that's what parents have to remind them to do all the time.
PHRASE 11
[Normal] No estoy bromeando. [Slow] No estoy bromeando.
"I'm not kidding."
This can also be used when a parent gives a command but the children don't do as they’re told.
PHRASE 12
[Normal] Apaga la tele ahora. [Slow] Apaga la tele ahora.
"Turn the TV off now."
Children like watching television, so parents often need to remind them to turn it off and do something different!
