Hi, everyone! This is Rosa and today, we’ll be doing 10 must-know particles, prepositions and conjunctions for Spanish learners. Let’s go!
1. a "to"
Iré a cantar. "I'll go sing."
So you can use a to indicate an action like in this case - Iré a cantar. “I’ll go sing.”, but also if you want to indicate a location of place, Iré a Madrid. “I’ll go to Madrid.”
2. de "from"
Soy de Granada. "I'm from Granada."
So, okay in this sentence, you use de to show where you were born, but also, you can use it in sentences like - Vengo de Granada, “I come from Granada” to show where you came.
3. con "with"
Voy al cine con mi hermana. "I'm going to the movies with my sister."
So you use this particle when you want to say for example that you’re doing an action accompanied with another person.
4. en "in"
Vivo en un pueblo muy pequeño. "I live in a very small town."
En, you use it to indicate a location or a place.
5. y "and"
Tengo un gato, un perro y una tortuga. "I have a cat, a dog and a turtle."
So you use y when you want to concatenate more than one thing.
6. de "of"
El coche de Pablo es rojo. "Pablo's car is red."
So you use this particle to show possession so first, you say the thing that is possessed and then de and after that, the person that possesses the thing. So an example would be - El móvil de Rosa. “Rosa’s mobile phone.”
7. para "to"
Para aprender español, hay que estudiar. "To learn Spanish, you have to study."
So you use this particle to show purpose and actually, we have a video inside the teacher’s series explaining the differences between por and para, how to use them so don’t forget to check it out.
8. por "for/because of"
Me casé por amor. "I married for love."
You use the particle por to determine the cause of something so you can also say, for example -
Lo hice por ella. “I did it for her.”
9. sin "without"
No puedo escribir sin lápiz. "I can't write without a pencil."
So this particle is the opposite of con, a particle we saw before. So yeah, it would be like without and with.
10. pero "but"
Salí a comprar algo, pero no recuerdo el qué. "I went out to buy something, but I don't remember what."
You can use pero when you want to show that there’s some kind of contradiction between the second sentence and the first sentence so in this case for example, you went out to buy something, but you don’t remember what you wanted to buy.
