Becky: Here’s the informal way to ask “Do you speak English?” in Spanish.
Laura: [Normal] ¿Hablas inglés?
Becky: First is a word meaning “you speak”
Laura: [Normal] hablas [Slow] hablas
Becky: Last is the word meaning “English”
Laura: [Normal] inglés [Slow] inglés
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning “Do you speak English?”
Laura: [Slow] ¿Hablas inglés? [Normal] ¿Hablas inglés?
Becky: Now, imagine you’re speaking to a stranger. Here’s the formal way to ask, “Do you speak English?”
Laura: [Normal] ¿Habla inglés?
Becky: First is a word meaning “you speak” using the formal register.
Laura: [Normal] habla [Slow] habla
Becky: Last is the word meaning “English”
Laura: [Normal] inglés [Slow] inglés
