Becky: Welcome to 3-Minute Spanish Season 1, Lesson 17 - Why? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask why in Spanish.
Becky: Here’s how to ask “Why are you late?” in Spanish.
Laura: [Normal] ¿Por qué llegas tarde?
Becky: First is a word meaning “why”
Laura: [Normal] por qué [Slow] por qué
Becky: Next is the word meaning “arrive”
Laura: [Normal] llegas [Slow] llegas
Becky: Last is the word meaning “late”
Laura: [Normal] tarde [Slow] tarde
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning “Why are you late?”
Laura: [Slow] ¿Por qué llegas tarde? [Normal] ¿Por qué llegas tarde?
Becky: Now, imagine you are late because you missed the train. Here’s the way to say, “I missed the train.”
Laura: [Normal] Perdí el tren.
Becky: First is a word meaning “missed”
Laura: [Normal] perdí [Slow] perdí
Becky: Next is the word meaning “the”
Laura: [Normal] el [Slow] el
Becky: Last is the word meaning “train”
Laura: [Normal] tren [Slow] tren
Becky: Note again the rising intonation. Listen again to the sentence “I missed the train.”
Laura: [Slow] Perdí el tren. [Normal] Perdí el tren.
Becky: Here’s another sample question using the word why - “Why do you leave so early?”
Laura: [Normal] ¿Por qué te vas tan temprano?
Becky: First is a word meaning “why”
Laura: [Normal] por qué [Slow] por qué
Becky: Next is the word meaning “you”
Laura: [Normal] te [Slow] te
Becky: Next is the word meaning “leave”
Laura: [Normal] vas [Slow] vas
Becky: Next is the word meaning “so”
Laura: [Normal] tan [Slow] tan
Becky: Last is the word meaning “early”
Laura: [Normal] temprano [Slow] temprano
Becky: Listen again to the question, “Why do you leave so early?”
Laura: [Slow] ¿Por qué te vas tan temprano? [Normal] ¿Por qué te vas tan temprano?
Becky: Here’s a response meaning, “To not miss the train.”
Laura: [Normal] Para no perder el tren.
Becky: First is a word meaning “for”
Laura: [Normal] para [Slow] para
Becky: Next is the word meaning “no”
Laura: [Normal] no [Slow] no
Becky: Next is the word meaning “miss”
Laura: [Normal] perder [Slow] perder
Becky: Next is the word meaning “the”
Laura: [Normal] el [Slow] el
Becky: Last is the word meaning “train”
Laura: [Normal] tren [Slow] tren
Becky: Listen again to the response, “Not to miss the train.”
Laura: [Slow] Para no perder el tren. [Normal] Para no perder el tren.

Laura: You can use the phrase “why not?”, which in Spanish is ¿Por qué no?, in the same situations that you would use it in English.
