Becky: Here’s how to ask “Why are you late?” in Spanish.
Laura: [Normal] ¿Por qué llegas tarde?
Becky: First is a word meaning “why”
Laura: [Normal] por qué [Slow] por qué
Becky: Next is the word meaning “arrive”
Laura: [Normal] llegas [Slow] llegas
Becky: Last is the word meaning “late”
Laura: [Normal] tarde [Slow] tarde
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning “Why are you late?”
Laura: [Slow] ¿Por qué llegas tarde? [Normal] ¿Por qué llegas tarde?
Becky: Now, imagine you are late because you missed the train. Here’s the way to say, “I missed the train.”
Laura: [Normal] Perdí el tren.
Becky: First is a word meaning “missed”
Laura: [Normal] perdí [Slow] perdí
Becky: Next is the word meaning “the”
Laura: [Normal] el [Slow] el
Becky: Last is the word meaning “train”
