Becky: What are you doing? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask what someone is doing in Spanish.

Lesson focus

Becky: Here’s the informal way to ask “What are you doing?” in Spanish.
Laura: [Normal] ¿Qué haces?
Becky: First is a word meaning “what”
Laura: [Normal] qué [Slow] qué
Becky: Last is the word meaning “you do”
Laura: [Normal] haces [Slow] haces
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning “What are you doing?”
Laura: [Slow] ¿Qué haces? [Normal] ¿Qué haces?
Becky: Now, imagine you’re speaking to a stranger. Here’s the formal way to ask, “What are you doing?”
Laura: [Normal] ¿Qué está usted haciendo?
Becky: First is a word meaning “what”
Laura: [Normal] qué [Slow] qué
Becky: Next is the word meaning “are”
Laura: [Normal] está [Slow] está
Becky: Next is the word meaning “you” using the formal register.
Laura: [Normal] usted [Slow] usted
Becky: Last is the word meaning “doing”
Laura: [Normal] haciendo [Slow] haciendo
Becky: Note again the rising intonation. Listen again to the formal question meaning “What are you doing?”

Becky: Last is the word meaning “special”
