Becky: Welcome to 3-Minute Spanish Season 1, Lesson 12 - What are you doing? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask what someone is doing in Spanish.
Becky: Here’s the informal way to ask “What are you doing?” in Spanish.
Laura: [Normal] ¿Qué haces?
Becky: First is a word meaning “what”
Laura: [Normal] qué [Slow] qué
Becky: Last is the word meaning “you do”
Laura: [Normal] haces [Slow] haces
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning “What are you doing?”
Laura: [Slow] ¿Qué haces? [Normal] ¿Qué haces?
Becky: Now, imagine you’re speaking to a stranger. Here’s the formal way to ask, “What are you doing?”
Laura: [Normal] ¿Qué está usted haciendo?
Becky: First is a word meaning “what”
Laura: [Normal] qué [Slow] qué
Becky: Next is the word meaning “are”
Laura: [Normal] está [Slow] está
Becky: Next is the word meaning “you” using the formal register.
Laura: [Normal] usted [Slow] usted
Becky: Last is the word meaning “doing”
Laura: [Normal] haciendo [Slow] haciendo
Becky: Note again the rising intonation. Listen again to the formal question meaning “What are you doing?”
Laura: [Slow] ¿Qué está usted haciendo? [Normal] ¿Qué está usted haciendo?
Becky: Here’s a response meaning “I am studying.”
Laura: [Normal] Estoy estudiando.
Becky: First is a word meaning “I am”
Laura: [Normal] Estoy [Slow] Estoy
Becky: Last is the word meaning “studying”
Laura: [Normal] estudiando [Slow] estudiando
Becky: Listen again to the response, “I am studying.”
Laura: [Slow] Estoy estudiando. [Normal] Estoy estudiando.
Becky: Here’s a response meaning, “I’m doing nothing special.”
Laura: [Normal] Nada en especial.
Becky: First is a word meaning “nothing”
Laura: [Normal] nada [Slow] nada
Becky: Next is the word meaning “in”
Laura: [Normal] en [Slow] en
Becky: Last is the word meaning “special”
Laura: [Normal] especial [Slow] especial
Becky: Listen again to the response, “I’m doing nothing special.”
Laura: [Slow] Nada en especial. [Normal] Nada en especial.
Cultural Insight
Becky: Now it’s time for a quick cultural insight.
Laura: If you don’t feel like giving an explanation of what you’re doing, you can just say no es asunto tuyo which means "It’s none of your business". But just between friends!

"qué" with accent means "what" and "que" without accent menas "that".

You can also use an online keyboard.

If someone has already mentioned it, please disregard. But, under Lesson Notes "que" means what, but under vocabulary, "que" is defined as that.


Both que's should have an accent above the "e". I need to download the Spanish keyboard for my computer.
